98 TAURUS beats up on ricePunkAlex 01-23-2004, 07:07 PM Me and my friend were crusin in his 98 ford taurus with the 24 valve dohc v-6 which i finally convinced him to mod. We put a new high flow filter w/ a custom (ghetto rigged) cold air shield and took off his fake y pipe mufflers (it was loud!). WE probably freed up 20 or so horsepower seeing how restrictive the mufflers were(stock exuast). We also tuned it up nice and good and lowered the air pressure in the tires. Sooo....we went crusin around town just lookin for some auto civics to embarrass. The first ricer was a del sol that we had raced before (sorta half raced and half beaten). I dont believe it was a vtec because it was pathetically slow. We used the manual shift on the auto and powerbraked up till 3k at the light with the sol beside us. We got the launch and pulled his ass hard :lol2: Next was a cavvy with alzettas and 17" chromes. Knocked his ass into the ground as well. He sorta got the launch, but passed him with our trans in 2nd. Then came our last race (lotsa cops around....he doesnt need another speeding ticket :grinno: ) was against a civ ex nonvtec (i could tell cause it was exactly like my sis's). The guy had a 5 speed but it was still a 17 second car (had exaust and prob a CAI)...We played with him for about 3 seconds then floored it....BAM he was lookin at the taurus's nice rx-7 rip off taillights(in my opinion-look at a stock taurus taillight setup next time and tell me if it doesnt look like a rx7 taillight setup). We headed home and sorta played a lil with a gt (he pulled us pretty hard from a roll). WE got back to his house and took off the mods (1 hour on, 20 minutes off). You gotta love seeing the looks on peoples faces when they get beat badly by a nice american 4 door taurus! :evillol: -The Stig- 01-23-2004, 07:20 PM I'm curious as to why you would take the parts back off? :sly: Was he skeer'd of all the power YOU guys unleashed? :p Bunta 01-23-2004, 07:42 PM Why lower the tire air pressure? That would just make it less responsive off the line. I'm sure the motor revs nicer without the muffler, but with the auto you would want the back pressure of the stock muffler for bottom end torque. That is the only thing that keeps automatics alive: torque. It's good you had a heat shield, and not just the ghetto filter because around town the engine bay heats up and you lose torque really fast having the factory airbox removed. For more ghetto fabulousness, you guys should remove one of the foglights and rig up a cold air snorkel with some dryer vent/duct tubing from the foglight hole to the air filter sitting inside the heat shield. Just don't drive through any puddles with it like that, or at least drill a hole in the duct's lowest point so trapped water can drip out. You guys should have this all rigged up so you can strap it all on for saturday nights HA HA. Stupid stuff, but funny. Remember to have plenty of area around the air filter for air to get to it from all sides. Is the cold air chamber sealed? I wont be held liable for whatever happens to this poor car. GHETTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. -The Stig- 01-23-2004, 07:58 PM Why lower the tire air pressure? That would just make it less responsive off the line. Lower air pressure in the tire makes the tire tread pattern 'flatten' out some. Which gives you a larger contact patch with the road and will help give you better bite when you punch it. Also the lower air pressure helps the side walls flex a bit... also helping traction. Bunta 01-23-2004, 08:18 PM Man, I can't begin to imagine how badly that taurus will handle with 20psi in front and 30 in the rear. Just call it the plow king. PunkAlex 01-23-2004, 08:24 PM I'm curious as to why you would take the parts back off? Was he skeer'd of all the power YOU guys unleashed? heh heh heh its not his car per say-its his parents. And without mufflers that thing was cheap rice loud (bad loud). And shit man, freeing up just those little things made it noticeably faster. But yeah it wasnt a lot but it did the job. Our whole "modification" thing was just having fun...not serious "high performance" (see pics below) Remember to have plenty of area around the air filter for air to get to it from all sides. Is the cold air chamber sealed? I wont be held liable for whatever happens to this poor car. GHETTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Dude ghetto doesnt even begin to describe our "CAI": http://www.angelfire.com/nc3/punkalexspics/hsfront.jpg Yes thats aluminum foil http://www.angelfire.com/nc3/punkalexspics/hsback.jpg Yes thats cardboard from a shoebox and duct tape CAnt beat DIY! Bunta 01-23-2004, 09:15 PM Dude, dude. You need CURROGATED cardboard. Single ply aint gonna cut it. hilarious, but in a way, you two are smarter than a lot of those honda boys. You have a car that you can still USE. The "speed" parts cost little and come from the local hardware store. The car probably looks halfway decent, because the body probably hasn't been molested. If you keep the muffler on it and no stickers, the cops wont look at you twice. This is the way I see it. People say that it's okay to mod the Civic that their parents bought them all to hell. It's like the old Hotrod days because we're hotroding what we have, right? FUCKING WRONG. You're modding what you have, because everybody has a honda, and every time you turn on the TV, look in a magazine, or your clock radio wakes you up people are trying to sell you crap for your car. You guys are in it simply for the fun of it, and I can apreciate that. There is a line that has to be drawn. Maybe you guys agree with me. Hondas are terrific cars, sure. They are well made, good motors, transmissions, styling never really looks dorky etc. The hack and slash modifications that people do to them almost never improves them. That taurus that you guys are running around in is a transition car, no? You can have fun in it, without ruining it when it comes time to collect your pennies in resale. Then, you buy a REAL car when you are ready. That is why you go home and play GT, because you see this difference between the reality of your limited knowledge and your desire to be one with a real driving machine. I speculate, I should not type when drinking. GT4 is coming!!! YAY!!! -Josh- 01-24-2004, 04:49 PM Interesting observation Bunta, maybe you should drink more often...j/k But seriously i totally agree with what you said, some people take modding way to seriously(the signature of mustangroadracer proves that) and it should be about having fun. Some people just need to learn that some cars should be used for their manufactured purpose(economy, or whatnot) I've always wanted to get a 2 door 80's escort with a 5 speed(the little hatchback ones), and use wood 2X4's as a body kit and a wing, and put a folgers can on the back...Just for fun. pod 01-25-2004, 10:20 PM hell i just bought and sold one of those it was an 87 with the 1.9 it had slotted aluminum rims 5 speed and was the gl model so it had the sun roof grand total $100 but like i say it was sold vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
