It sounds like it could be the thermostat ......stuck closed.

I haven't personally worked on a Malibu, but as a general rule of thumb you follow your top rad hose from the rad to the block, and you should see the housing.

I have a 93 Escort also..and tried to find the rad thermostat....no luck,,
is there a fair sized housing that has to come off at the end of the top rad hose?

thanks in advance...

As Rich said follow the upper rad hose and you'll find it next to the exhaust manifold. Have fun. It's not easily accessible. I changed mine when I had access to it while doing my intake gasket.

Yeah, my Haynes manuals says it is under air intake if it's a V6 model.(Air filter housing hose)
First, you need to drain coolant (not all, about half and if it's clean then use it again)
Second, remove air intake housing.
Thrid, disconnect the hose and repleace the thermostat.

Good luck! buy manual!!

MAKE SURE YOU BLEED THE SYSTEM AFTER REPLACING THE THERMOSTAT!!!! I didn't and my car overheated from air in the system.
