NO it would be a terrible idea, you cannot sandblast soft metals. The valve cover is aluminum. What you need to do is get some aircraft remover and use that to get the black wrinkle paint off. Or you can bead blast it, but that is the only 2 options.

What are you tring to accomplish? Do you just want the bare metal look or the polished look?

Sounds like the one you have is already ruined if you keep experimenting on it. Sell the old one on ebay or www.thepartstrader.com (http://www.thepartstrader.com) and go buy the polished/painted one you want. Or get a paint shop to paint the old one up for you (or paint it yourself with some engine/heat resistant paint).

Right, but I figure he is going for some new look or engine detailing.

I am just saying he could clean it off nicely (or the paint shop would) and use the wrinkle paint as a primer fairly easily and affordably.

Dont worry about sanding it, just strip the wrinkle paint like wht teg described.

I used fine grit sand with a sand blaster. while it did not hurt the valve cover it also did not get the job done as good as aircraft remover will.
take whhteg's advice and be ready to have some patience

Here is what it will look like after the aircraft remover. The right hand side that is :P the left side is where I started polishing it, have not finished it yet :P
