I'am test driving a 97 Bonneville over the weekend and hear the tranny whining. I have read the about the problems with the tranny and want to know the chance of this tranny going out on me if I buy the car. Or is the whine a benign problem? The car shifts smoothly so far...

The car is real clean and relatively low miles at 59000. Its the SSE model.

Buy the way, what is a fair asking price for a loaded SSE?

Thanks for any advice/help.

Might want to go with your gut feelings on it, but if you decide to go for it, better plan on a "Worse Case" scenero and prepare on getting another tranny.....if your that unsure. On price, I usually check the local trader paper for your area, and you can get a free ballpark price from Kelley Blue Book, and NADA (which most C.U. and Banks use) Links below:

Good Luck!
