I have a 95 Eclipse 2.0 DOHC. And its running like shit right now. When i drive the car, it backfires through the intake(not stock) and hesitates a lot! Horrible excelleration and idles kinda crappy. Any ideas? I was thinkin there is(are) a valve(s) stuck open? head rebuild?

the idle bounces(in park). And say when i sit at a light or stop sign for a while(car in drive with the foot on the brake), the car shakes and seems to try and jump forward repeatedly. Also, the backfires are most severe and occur most often in the lower gears.

Welcome to the club, you have Idle Surge
It sucks if you have an auto, because it will push the car while you are on the brakes, I have a manual so i dont have that problem. You can put the car in neutral at the light so if it surges it wont do anything, it will just rev the car. But that is a pain in the ass. :banghead:
I have blocked off the egr valve, and cleaned the throttle body. They did not solve the problem. But they helped a lot. Mine has been surgeing a lot more lately i think it is cause of the cold weather DAM MICHIGAN.

try changing the BISS? base idle set screw or some crap.. heh..
my car surges a little, but only right after i cold start it.. then again, i have a rather annoying lifter tap right after i cold start.. and the head is 2 months old, and i just replaced 2 lifters a few days ago.. i hope it shuts up.. one of them was badly damaged. Not sure if it was defective with the new head, or i have an oil delivery problem.. *shrug*
anyway, good luck =D

Idle surge doesnt explain the backfiring though...

No it is idle surge, but there is another problem that is causing the backfiring. You might want to try doing a couple of searches on backfiring.

for the idle problem it sounds like the throttle posiyioning sensor. i had the same problem with my 98 eclipse rs. cost about

check your plugs they might be bad or gap to big, I had the same problems when I put a set of bosch pltnm. plugs, the guy at the auto store gave the wrong gap size to me and after about a week my car would start to back fire and idle funny, so I took my car to a mitsu dealer and they told me it was the plugs causing all the problems

The surge is due to a TPS (throttle positioning sensor) It is notorious on Talons and Eclipse. You can adjust the screw to allow more/less air. It will lower you idle and stop the surging.

Also think about a misfiring on one of the cylinders.
