I recently got a new gearbox put it and now I can click my automatic transmmition below 2nd and the car runs on 1st gear. So now i have 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear in my automatic. The car goes like crazy now ;p Anyway just wondering if any of you guys have a 1st gear in your automatics.

Actually NO the automatics DO NOT have a first gear selectable. Obviously it has a first gear but not selectable with the gear stick. the lowest gear selectable on the automatic is 2nd gear not first and what i'm saying is now i can click the gear knob back beyond 2nd and get 1st gear. I think you musta misunderstood what i was trying to say originally.

yeah , the newer ones with 2.73 gears in back have a lockout to prevent going to 1st only. You can do it if you break the lock. It will just go down past 2.

I think it might have something to do with the fact to tranny will overide your shift if you go past 45mph in first gear. My bet is a 2.73 can do that alot better than my 3.23s can . Maybe a plus feature for 3.23 performance geared cars.

ok if you had 2,3,d,od and you say u just got 1st that would mean you have a 5 sp auto, or do you mean you changed it to 1 , 2 , d, od, which my 93z28 was equiped with, an im sure you dont have a 5sp auto , unless its after market and you got a new center console deal which they dont make for 5 sp auto's, and my car had the 3.23 gear, but changed it to a 373 and runs great

yeah my gear console is just like you say 93z28. I'm just saying that now i kinda discovered by accident that since i put in a new gearbox i can now kinda pull the gear stick back and it kinda clicks and then i'm running in 1st gear. makes taking off much faster since i can control 1st gear now whereas before i only had 2nd gear as my lowest selectable gear. sorry but thats the best description i can give.

wow where do i start. you prolly have a 4L60E. and if you got a new "gear Box" which you are prolly talking about a whole transmission. because your automatic does not have a gear box, it has clutches just like every other chevy auto tranny. secondly you still cannot control first gear unless your 15mph to 0mph the cpu wont let you. if you come to a stop and put the shifter into "1" of course its going to be in first gear. the same if it is in "D" or "OD" still via the kick down you will be in first gear. im assuming that your other tranny had either some sort of problem that wasnt letting it go into first gear. weather it be vacum or whatever why else would you change a transmission???? this is what you should do to show yourself that you really do not control the shifting put it in "1" and floor it and hold it. if it shifts by its self then i am right if it bounces off the rev limiter then you have a 700r4 im still right.

all lt1's have the 4l60e auto or the t56. My brothers 94 impala has the 4l60e and it has a selection for 1 or L. Even if you put it into 2, it will still start and hold first gear long, but shifts into 2nd and will hold that gear. Also low does not mean first gear. If you put it in low at say 50mph it will kickdown and hold 2nd gear until u get into about the middle rpm's of first gear.

The 4l60e is a computerized version of the 700r4.

4 gears
L is for style of case(RWD, T is for FWD...like a caddy will have a 4t60e)
60 is for the torque rating, 360lbs.
E is for electronic.

They also make a 4l80e for trucks. They have higher torque rating then the 60, these will swap onto a Lt1 with a different crossmember and mount on the tranny. The Best GM transmission as far as strength is the old Turbo400, the drawback is only 3 speeds.

The T56 is a Tremec 6 speed manual. Found in Lt1 Camaros and Corvettes, as well as LS1 camaros. The Ls1 corvettes use the same actual gears, but it is set differently on the rear axel so a t56 from a c5 is not compatible with any other car.

the reason they didnt allow the auto camaro to drop into first was bcuz of noise control laws. if u had the choice of starting in first the decibal level was to loud to pass inspection... there is your answer

you sure about that...i dont think that a stock camaro in first gear would break any kindof noise law. 1st gear was only locked out while the car was movin above a certain speed. everytime you stop first gear can engage...

yeah , the newer ones with 2.73 gears in back have a lockout to prevent going to 1st only. You can do it if you break the lock. It will just go down past 2.

Did that free mod years ago - you simply pop up the top shifter console and cut away the piece of plastic that blocks the shifter from getting down into "1".

And yes, Camzaro is correct - noise pollution bylaws... kind of dumb.

Nevertheless, I'd watch out Zwrangler. You will mess up your tranny with a lot of 1-2-D-2-1 shifting. I played "standard" with mine a lot and now the tranny has become extremely slow and stupid. I'm hoping that the shiftkit I drop in this spring will clear that up and that no serious/expensive damage will appear.

4L60E's are best left in "D" - 700R4 boys on the otherhand... you guys get all the fun!

EDIT: actually, the noise pollution issue kinda makes sense - 1st gear on my oddball 2.93 geared 4L60E goes up to 80 Kph/48 Mph @ 6000 RPM, and with an 80 series Flowmaster its pretty damn LOUD! 1st gear on a 2.73 ratio (shifting at the same RPM) would be even longer. Image driving around town in maximum 45 Mph speed zones stuck in "1" all day!

Not that anyone would be stupid enough to burn that much gas or beat the motor but it would be one big headache if they tried...
