why call it an s2000 if its because of it being a 2.0L...why not call it an s2 or an s20?

Jay!

2.0 L = 2000 cc

The name of the S2000 was derived from the small roadsters/coupes Honda made in the '60s: the S500, S600 and S800, where each name had "S" which stood for sport and a number for the engine displacement.

it isnt being called the s2200, its called the s2000, and its a good thing to up displacement for more torque and a more useable power band.

My point is that it should have been called the S2200, because of the increase in displacement.

After a few years, they forgot why they called it the s2000.

The S2200 doesn't sound as good as the S2000, know what i mean?

um since when has calling the car by the displacement of its engine a honda thing. Off the top of my head i cant think of any other honda or acura for that matter that doesnt have a name or letters. Numbers is more of a bmw and benz thing. And s2200 is a stupid name. Id call it the s22.

what an interesting thread topic, though i think it follows along engine codes much more than car names any more... it is an f22c in there now instead of the f20 last year....

If I made and sold a popular car that was already widely branded as the "S2000," you'd have to shoot me before I changed the name to something else new to the public.

Why? It's a built in advertisement that there's MORE! 200 more, in fact. The casual observer might have no idea 200 whats, but who cares? There's MORE of something in there. Everybody wants more, right? (In the U.S., anyway...)

For example:
Do you want a Lexus GS400 or a GS430? Hell, get the GS430; there's 30 more of something in there, right?

Another Example:
Nissan [Datsun] sold some 240Zs. Then, they brought out the 260Z. Wow, even better, right? What's next? Oh! a 280Z. Great! What else? A 280ZX? Super; an extra letter, and an "X" to boot. We all know "X" is one of the coolest letters. Now look, a 300Z and a 300ZX. The "X" must be an option or something, but look, the number got bigger again! YAY! Last year: Boom! 350Z. No more "X," okay, but look: 50 more!! That's like the biggest increase ever! That's fantastic!!

...

My point is that alphanumeric model names are meaningless when they don't mean anything. (you'd think that'd be obvious!)

If they're going to abandon their own nomenclature, why not call it the "STMRG-XXX 2,000,000,000 - R " then? Who could turn down a car with that name?

I agree with the S22, sounds much better than the S2200 but it doesn't exactly have a Honda feel to it... (although you could argue S2000 didn't seem to match up with Civic, Accord, Passport, etc). Sure, S500, S600, S800... but that was a LONG time ago, Honda is a different company now.

Maybe S2k+2 (ripping off the 300ZX 2+2)
or just an S2000-R?

s2000 back then sounded like s2200 does now. i thought the name sounded cheesy - now i think of the nice car and the name sounds good. the same thing would have happened with the s2200 name.

actually....its still called the S2000 because it kept the 2.0L 2000cc engine in the rest of the world. It was only North America and Canada that got the larger displacement.

haha jeezus, what's the meaning of this discussion? It's been known as S2000 or AP1

Or they coulda just stuck a 5 litre V8 in it and called it the S5000. 5000 is more than 2000...so it's better. So everyone would buy it. Yay. But yeah..I kind of agree for both sides...it SHOULD be S2200..but S2000 just sounds better.

^^^i agree. the name wasnt just something slapped on, it was a mechanical reference so if those mechanics change, so should the name. i would think that calling it 2200 would make laymens think "omgwtflolroflma is da s22 thowsan is teh pwn" but i could see why they left it as is. i couldnt care less because i referred to it as the 'F20' and now i just say 'F22'.
