Gundam!(Not that Gundam Wing crap)Fearless Racer 01-12-2004, 10:22 AM Does anyone watch Gundam? One of my favorite shows so far. I got the DVD set for 0080(War in the Pocket) and 0083(Stardust Memory) and both of them are great. I still hate the fact that some people love Gundam Wing, yet they know nothing of the original shows that started the entire thing(without Mobile Suit Gundam, we'd have nothing). What does everyone else think? sugarcaddy 01-12-2004, 05:15 PM There are so many different Gundam shows out there, its hard for me to pinpoint a fav. I like Gundam Wing a lot better than that G Gundam crap. 0080 and 0083 have a lot of back history on the whole Gundam world but to really get the bottom line you should see the original Gundam show. Not the best animation, its late 70's anime, but the story is good. I like the Zeta and double Zeta Gundam story lines, lots of cool mech in those. I havent seen the new Gundam, but its sopost to be good... Scott Bilson8tor 01-12-2004, 10:15 PM wats wrong with Gundam Wing or G Gundam i think there all great Fearless Racer 01-13-2004, 07:54 AM Gundam Wing is okay; it's just that most people think it's the best show in the world. G Gundam is a DBZ ripoff plain & simple. I have seen the original Gundam(I guess I'll get the DVD set later) and half of Char's Counter Attack. I hear Gundam Seed will be good, but only time will tell. Layla's Keeper 01-18-2004, 09:49 PM 0079 is immortal amongst anime, and the rest of the Universal Century follow-ups to it are indeed classics. I'm partial to 0083, Zeta (which Bandai will be bringing over late this year, early next year), and Char's Counterattack. I'm also a fan of the Sentinel Side Stories and 08th MS Team. Victory Gundam, ZZ, and F91 I'm not as thrilled with. However, there's still plenty of good stuff in the alternate timeline Gundam canon. After War Gundam X provides a vital link to UC Gundam in its story and has some of the coolest mecha designs in all of Gundam. Turn A Gundam, with its mecha designs by Syd Mead (of Blade Runner fame) is phenomeonal. Wing is quite good on its own, and to discount it merely because it's popular amongst people who aren't knowledgable enough to track down fansubs of the unreleased series is fairly elitist. As for SEED, well, it's a good flashy retelling of 0079. It's not particularly revolutionary, but it does pretty well. Big Block Bob 01-20-2004, 12:39 PM Gundam Wing and G GUndam are the gayest crap I've ever seen! I hate them!!!!! All the other Gundams are cool. :iceslolan Psman32@af 01-20-2004, 04:47 PM I liekd gundam wing, but i have only seen a few of the others, as since then, i havent had the time to find them/watch them on TV, im too cheap to go DVD hunting for it. And as much as i like Gundam Wing, it is not the best show ever in my opinion, there are plenty other shows that I think are better Guyanson_Mendiola 01-27-2004, 02:24 AM I like Gundam Wing and I like that movie the Endless Waltz from GW that I think it's called. NSX-R-SSJ20K 02-02-2004, 08:47 AM G gundam is teh shite the rest is good but i really don't like 0080 all too much and V Gundam is a bit weird too. I wholey doubt that a little child could ever pilot anything. NNY666 04-01-2004, 12:16 AM Well gundam wing and all of that is a whole lot better that the new show "SD gundam"!!!that show is an insult to anime l33tc4k30fd00m 04-08-2004, 05:33 PM Gundam?? Never heard of it... NSX-R-SSJ20K 04-14-2004, 10:38 AM i got all the gundam series except the original. I don't really like 0080 0083 wing and Seed are the favourites turn A gundam is good too though Most of the gundam series seem samish though. Though wing and Turn A aren't. 08th MS team is good. O hell i like em all (except V gundam thats just shit.) AErrorist 07-14-2004, 10:52 AM 08th MS Team was good, but I always liked Gundam Wing, probaly because it was the first one I saw. The older gundams never caught on as hard with me. Musashi3000GT 07-23-2004, 11:34 AM Wing is good, in fact in Japan it was the biggest success since 0079. G gundam (which cant possibly be a rip off DBZ since it was out before DBZ was ever coungered up) and Gundam X where preaty big failures and the whole Gundam universe was in trouble. Wing saved the franchise cause it recaptured old fans as well as bring about a genereation of new enthusiests. thanks to Wing they where able to fund Stardust memories, Turned A and now Seed. I hate what they did to Wing here in the U.S. they butchered it! the original Japanese series is nucking futs though! Layla's Keeper 07-25-2004, 01:00 PM Musashi, you're way off base. First off - butchered? The Bandai dub is pretty word for word (although the Toonami daytime run was edited, they even showed it unedited at Midnight). Secondly, Wing didn't save the franchise from After War X, After War X came after Wing and flopped mostly because After War X was heavily HEAVILY based on an alternate ending to the One Year War of 0079. Thirdly, the Dragonball anime first aired in Japan in February 1986 and wrapped in April 1989, Z then ran from April 1989 to February 1996, with GT wrapping up the saga in a Feb 1996 to Feb 1997 run. The movies dated as follows - 1 in 1989, 2 in 1990, 3 in 1991, 1 in 1992, another 2 in 1993, 1 in 1994, and 1 in 1995. G Gundam ran from 1994-1995. There were definite Dragonball influences on G Gundam, however the mecha style and the ideals of the series actually came from classic Go Nagai-style giant robot shows from the 70's like Mazinger. Fourth point. Wing DID NOT fund the production of 0083. In fact, 0083 was a 13 episode OAV released in 1991-1992, four years before Sunrise pulled the wraps off of Gundam Wing. In fact, 0083 was a money maker designed to recoup losses from the adventurous but misguided F91 Gundam movie (which will see a limited stateside release in theaters this year). It was followed up by the unconventional, and surprisingly morose, Victory Gundam. As for Turn A Gundam, Turn A was a massive undertaking by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 2000 to celebrate Gundam's now twenty plus year heritage. "Kill 'em All" Tomino was supported by such anime greats as mecha designer Mahiro Maeda (Blue Submarine #6 and Vandread), soundtrack artist Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, Macross Plus, Escaflowne), and invited the man behind Blade Runner, Syd Mead, to lend his artistic vision to design the new series' Gundam. It was the first time Tomino had worked on Gundam since Char's Counterattack wrapped in 1988. So, try and check your facts before spouting your mouth off. Because, obviously you are a :newbie: RedLightning 07-26-2004, 03:40 PM I used to watch Gundam Wing, and liked it, but have never seen the other series, could someone post a list of all the series? Layla's Keeper 07-26-2004, 06:54 PM Okay, Gundam is divided into timelines, so I'll try to put the series timelines into order for you. Here you go. Along with that, I'll give the year of release and if the series is available in the U.S. yet. Keep in mind that Bandai owns the rights to all Gundam merchandise, series, movies, and games as Bandai of Japan finances Sunrise studios, the creators of Gundam. I'll start with the Universal Century timeline (the original Gundam series) Mobile Suit Gundam - 1979. 43 episode TV series. Released as dub only TV series DVD's or sub only movie DVD's (movies are just condensed TV series with fewer filler episodes). Currently available. 08th MS Team - 12 episodes, 1996 to 1999 OAV with condensed movie edition (Miller's Report) released in 1998. Currently available. Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket - 6 episodes, 1989 OAV. Currently available. Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories - 13 episodes, 1991 OAV. Currently available. Zeta Gundam - 50 episodes, 1985-86 TV series. Bandai plans a Cartoon Network run, but delayed availability of Zeta to release SEED. Gundam ZZ (aka Double Zeta) - 47 episodes, 1986-87 TV series. No set plans for release. Char's Counterattack - Theatrical release movie, 1988. Currently available. Gundam F91 - Theatrical release movie, 1991. Bandai is readying a limited release in American theaters this year for F91. Victory Gundam - 51 episode TV series, 1993-1994. No set plans for release. RedLightning 07-26-2004, 10:08 PM sweet thanks. Ultimate X 07-31-2004, 10:23 AM gundam is the best anime out there if u guys want more info www.tvtome.com ProjectPhantom 09-01-2004, 03:49 AM seed was probably the best gundam series made but the ending was so dissapointing.... and SD gundam... just stay away at all costs... Zaphod Beeblebrox 10-15-2004, 10:09 PM Does anyone watch Gundam? One of my favorite shows so far. I got the DVD set for 0080(War in the Pocket) and 0083(Stardust Memory) and both of them are great. I still hate the fact that some people love Gundam Wing, yet they know nothing of the original shows that started the entire thing(without Mobile Suit Gundam, we'd have nothing). What does everyone else think? Gundam Wing rocked! Of course most of us only know and love that series is because thats what Cartoon network aired. Don't shit on the Wing series. dpsayz 01-01-2005, 02:17 AM honestly i think that 8th ms team was a KICK ASS SERISE hands down .. i liked it the best .. i loved it .. and when i get the money im going to buy it on dvd .. haha :naughty: and hey what was wrong with gundam wing ?? i thought that it was great .. not crap like what your saying .. probably because you only saw the US shitty version .. not the real japanese version .. Layla's Keeper 01-01-2005, 05:17 AM Actually, if you own the dual language DVD's you see that the dub and the sub are about equivalent. Most of the complaints about Gundam Wing center on its lack of real character development (hell, at least Shagia Frost has a reason for being a surly jackass, and becomes something more), its meandering plot around the center of the story (they had concepts at either end that were rushed and poorly explained, yet spent a multitude of episodes in the middle just mired in the "rejuvenated Sanc Kingdom" story arc), and heavy use of stock footage (how many times did we see the same Leo blow up? ). Wing has its strengths to be sure. The character designs are still top notch, and the Hajime Katoki non-Gundam mecha designs are first rate. The series has an interesting premise, a good general plot, and is a very easy Gundam series to watch if you're new to the franchise. However, once you compare it to true Gundam series as written and directed by Yoshiyuki "Kill 'em All" Tomino, Wing is poor quality material. With Mobile Suit Gundam, Char's Counterattack, and now Zeta Gundam all released in the States by Bandai, we now have the creme de la creme of Gundam available for purchase. When you can have Char versus Amuro, why get anything else? SniperX13 01-19-2005, 02:50 AM I just built a few of the Gundam Figures, because I liked they way they looked, I now I am interested in starting to watch the episodes. I am curious, as to which would be the best series thats available, to introduce me into the story line of Gundam. thanks. Layla's Keeper 01-19-2005, 02:56 AM Well, Gundam SEED is pretty good for watching as a new viewer of the Gundam canon. It's basically a modernized retelling of the original Mobile Suit Gundam. If you don't mind older animation, though, definitely watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam as its one of the gold standards of anime. Gundam Wing is also very good to watch as an introductory series. I would, however, strongly recommend not watching the "Universal Century" Gundam series separately without at least first watching Mobile Suit Gundam (see my earlier post for an explanation). They're all very closely connected and many events simply will not make sense without the history of the other series. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
