Hello
Started an conversion of a Revell Audi Rally Quattro in to the classic Sportquattro.
For those who are not Audi-freaks by nature, the Sportquattro was a street homologation version of the famous rallycar. Around 200 were made. The Sportquattro had 320 mm shorter wheelbase than the more common Urquattro coupe to give it better handling. It had carbon fiber body panels with wider fenders, differend hood with lot of airvents, etc. The engine was a 306 Hp 2,2 Liter 5-cyl turbo. 0-100 km/h i 4.9 sec. And all this back in 1985 !! Check out some 1:1 pics here: http://www.sportquattro.ch/gallery/streetcars/red/details.htm
It may not be bautiful, but its pretty fat in my opinion :naughty:
So here are some pics of the conversion so far.
I have shortened the body, made the fenders wider, raised the windshield (the sportquattro actually had doors from the Audi 80 and a the steeper windshield angle so the rally drivers would see less reflections in the windshield..)

Great project and nice work so far.
There is a company in my town that will convert a 1:1 Quattro into a sport replica and they cut the body in the same way that you have.
I hope your going to paint it that nice red colour, that the sport came in.

Thanks for all the comments !
Haven't been so much progress lately, but more of puttying and sanding.. a lot of sanding actually..
I have at least got the body together after some semi-advanced "surgery" with cyanoacrylic glue on the A-pillars which were too weak
I'm not sure, but i think the rear fenders needs to be wider also. Maybe another sheet of styrene there. It doesent look "fat" enough although the measurements should be in scale of the 1:1 SPQ...
The rear bumper needs to become wider as well to fit the fenders. The area between the door and rear wheel arc has got some basic detailing with a bit of styrene, but no putty until I've decided what to do with the rear fenders..

I agree, the rear need to be pumped out just a touch while the front guards look spot on. its starting to look real good, we keep watch on the progress.

So, some progress has finally been made...
I have shortened the chassis and testfitted the wheels. Then it was easy to see that the rear fenders were to narrow. So I have put another sheet of 1 mm styrene and a small piece of 0,3 mm styrene. Now it is seriously wide at the back.. Maby too wide, but at least it looks better. Only problem is the front starts to look too narrow... I test-primered one front fender and I think it will look ok with real paint on it.
The rear bumper has had some width added to match with the fenders, and I have started a little at the air intakes in the front bumper.
Im thinking of painting the body in the classic Audi Tornado Red.
The SPQ only came in a few colours, Alpine white, Copenhagen blue, Malachit Green, Black and Tornado red.
The interior will be strictly race-spec with roll cage.
The chassis:
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC00984kopia.jpg
Needs some more width at the rear:
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC00991kopia.jpg
Added another 1,3 mm more on each side. (total of 2,6 mm per side now.)

Rear, widened bumper aligned to the fender.

Finished the front hood, and primered the whole front end.
Still need some wet-sanding and small touch-up's here and there.
Also there will be some slots for the air intake in the hood on the right hand side.
You can also see the three slots in the front bumper, and the ventilation holes by the windscreen that have a different look than the Urquattro.

So..finally a big update !!
Since my last update I have almost finished the body.
I started with the air intake in the front hood. I will take the opportunity to describe a useful technique to cut out panels and other stuff:
First I marked the cut-out and drilled a small hole.
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC01026kopia.jpg
Then I put a piece of standard sewing thread (yes that's right..) through the hole.
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC01027kopia.jpg
Then, holding one end of the thread in each hand, start pulling the thread forwards and backwards against the edge of the hole. The speed is essential here ! Too fast and the plastic melts, the thread gets stuck and brakes off.. Too slow nothing happens. You want to keep the speed where the plastic juuust starts to melt. It will take some practice ant the thread still brakes a lot of times, but with the correct speed and technique you can cut a few centimeters in just seconds:
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC01028kopia.jpg
The biggest advantage is the control of the cut. There is no risk of slipping like with a knife blade and cutting off things you didn't plan to cut off, like bodyparts, neither on the wehicle or on the modeler himself.. :eek7: You wont crack off or bend delicate parts etc..
The edge will get a little rough, but the cut is very thin.
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC01029kopia.jpg
Using a file I widened the hole all the way out to the line:
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC01030kopia.jpg
I used small strips of thin styrene and stated to fill the hole. This was quite painstaking work..
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC01033kopia.jpg
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/plexxi/Sportquattro/DSC01035kopia.jpg
Finally I got the whole body primered:

For the wheels: of course he will change them! :loser: These are the box stock kit wheels, Quattro Sport's ones were completely different! He only used them to show us what the car looked like at this stage...:smokin:
After all that has been done, working on the wheels won't be the most difficult part, I think... but I may be wrong!:icon16:
Something I'm wondering about: how will you do, Martin S, with the windshield?:sly:

Yes, the wheels are the box stock ones, just to give an idea how the car will look.. They are however to narrow..
The spq had these 9x15" Speedline magnesium wheels:
http://www.nordicaudi.com/arkivet/bildarkivet/001119_hallen/bilder/pb180061.jpg
I'm not sure how I will recreate these, but I think I will try to modify the wheels that came with the kit.
The windows is another interesting area. The kit has all the windows casted in one piece. I think I will cut them apart in separate pieces. The side windows have to be shortened. The windshield actually seems to fit almost perfectly if I align it at the top and just remove approx 5 mm at the bottom at the dashboard.

Small update.
Not really going very fast this project :screwy:
Started a little on the interior.
Painted the rollcage and floor in what will be the body color. I want it to look like a totally stripped interior without carpets, just a cage and some seats.
I have added some "ears" to the headrests of the seats to make the kits stock seats look a bit more modern.
The seat back will be raw carbon fiber or glass fiber I think.

Taking loads of hay on your fork and still managing to do it correctly and beautiful, thats a real modeler!
as for the rims, I do think it would be easier if you just research some rims that look already similar to those you might need instead of scratchbuilding or extensively modifying those you already have. remember that you ll need to do the mods four times.
good luck and keep it up!

Nothing much new, but a few pics of the handpainted dashboard and a test-shot of the body with some 17" wheels.
Currently working on wet sanding the primered body.

They're actually Tamiya Porsche 959 rims, but was previously used on a beemer kit :)

Body has finally been painted..
Was quite worried to ruin the whole project with a bad paintjob, but it turned out quite nice. Still needs another coat on the roof and hood and some polishing in a few places.
The paint is Tamiya X-7 with some coats of X-22 clear.
For a few minutes after the second clear coat I was totally mad because the whole front end was turning into a milky white haze. Luckily it cleared up totally perfect in a few minutes. Phew..scary !
Also started on scratchbuilding the wheel-centers using the outer part of the box wheel. Also found some better tires for this car in an old Burago Lamborghini Diablo die-cast kit. Pretty weird, but they look good with correct thread pattern and everything
