What is the nationality of Bugatti ?

Bugatti has been created by Ettore Bugatti in Alsace (eastern France), an Italian living in France. In the 90's, Bugatti has been bought by an Italian. In the 2000's, Bugatti is bought by VAG.
So, is this make : French, Italian or German ?

It would be tempting to say German (as Molsheim in Alsace was in Germany when he moved there prior to WWI) but the marque is French in the best meaning of the term.

Molsheim was not long German, it has always been French except this period ;)

Is that a bad meaning of French cars ?....

I've verified, Bugatti is 100% French, the capital is Germano/Italiano/French (mainly German : VAG).

While Bugatti was born in Italy, it doesnt mean the company he starts was Italian.
The company is French, doesnt really matter who owns it. Saab isnt american, even though its owned by GM, for example.

Bugatti is italian. But is Chevrolet american? Well, Mr. Chevrolet was swiss! Don't you always thought "Chevrolet" sounded french? Well, the name comes from the french-speaking part of Switzerland.... I think I'll go and ask that question in the Muscle Cars forum!...or maybe not...

And Cadillac was founded by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac who founded also la "ville d'Etroit" (now Detroit !). Is Detroit a French town, and Cadillac a French make ?
Be serious, Cadillac is American as Bugatti is French. That's all. Same thing for Nissan, it's Japanese, not French, Chrysler is American, not German, Volvo Swedish, not American, etc. etc. etc.

Originally, Bugatti was French...then it closed up. Then it was revived as an Italian company...then it closed up. Then the name was purchased by VW and revived as a French company. So it all depends on WHICH Bugatti you're talking about.

Cadillac was founded by Henry Leland and Henry Ford....and NAMED FORD Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac...since he was dead well over a century before the car company was founded. No connection to France.

Bugatti is French or Italian, depending on which version of the company you're talking about.

What difference does it make, none of us can afford to drive one anyway.

You can indeed consider this side of the problem. But personnaly, I consider Saab as Swedish, Chrysler group as American and Bugatti as French ;) (historically).

all those may be true but when ford bought jag, a jag became a ford.

Cds : in fact, you (and some people) consider the capital of the company. And indeed, you can consider Jag as an American make, Jeep as German, Nissan as French, RollsRoyce as German, etc;
But personnaly, I prefer considering the automaker historically. ;)

Renault S.A owns 42% of the Nissan's capital.

Samurai75007

ahhh but usualy the cut off to owning is 51% of the company so that way you own more than anyone elce put together.

Stefanel1

Indeed, you're right. But in this case, Renault is the main shareholder in the Nissan Company. The current CEO of Nissan (Carlos Gohsn) worked by Renault and will be the new CEO of Renault/Nissan before 2008. They could buy 9% more, but they didn't want to do it. They may buy this percentage before 2010.

ok then, sounds good

In Japan, owning 1/3 of a company gives you "controlling interest" and veto power. So you don't need 50.1% to "own" or "control" a company. GM had this with Isuzu (but not currently), Ford has this with Mazda, DaimlerChrysler has this with Mitsubishi.

Look at the license plate!(ha-ha-ha) I think 80% of the people on A.F. would identify with the Volkswagen-owned V-16 grand touring car currently built. One of the finest luxury and racing cars in world history were built by the French firm in Alsace-Lorraine, primarily in the 1910s through 1930s. Try to buy either one today and you better have serious money and just not care how much they cost.

Automobiles Ettore Bugatti was a German then French car manufacturer of high-performance automobiles, founded in 1909 in the then-German city of Molsheim
