Have you considered getting the bearings replaced that go into the tops of the strut towers? Also, have you replaced your front ones as well?

the shocks dont cause the rattle the strut mounts do. they are the black top of the strut. the grooves get worn out making them bigger allowing more play from the shock cauing the rattle.

Strut mounts, and probably the struts. Had the same problem, the shocks in the Avalons don't go bad, i had mine upwards of 165,000 mil and never had a problem with the shocks. But I must've replaced the struts and the mounts about three times.

Pasco,

I have a 1997 Avalon and had a problem that sounds like yours. It was not the struts. The "clunking" noise (that happened when you went over bumps) was being caused by worn out (rubber) rear sway bar bushings. They cost about $16 each, and you need one for each side. They are very easy to replace, and completely solved the (clunking) noise that I thought was likely the struts. The problem started at around 80-90,000 miles. I replaced the bushings at around 95,000 and now have about 140,000 miles and no noise from the rear suspension. The car still has the original struts. It may be hard to check the bushings by getting under the car and moving the sway bar around - but it is very easy to remove them to see if they are worn. Check them out, and see if this is the problem. Good luck.

You can find those clear corners just about anywhere on the internet. All you'd have to do is search for them on google and thousands of places will come up with them.

The clunking is most likely sway bar bushings.
