i have a 97 civic ex...i got 17 in rims...however i didnt know that the widest i should go is 7 in....well i got 7.5 in
now if i have more than myself in my car it rubs on corners and dips in the road..the local racing shop said they could hook me up with obz struts and tenzo springs...and it wil lower 1.75 inch about....
heres the problem if i dont camber it will not rub and the shocks can be adjusted for stiffness or softness...and will be fine..however they will have the ghetto fab look of the tires vearing out like many a cheap looking honda has...and my steering and tire wear will be bad...
but they said because i have 7.5 in rims i can camber it but they will rub.....what am i gonna do??
help will be appreciated???

sorry i meant agx....and also i have to use this as my functional car its not just a street car where i can rip out all the seats and carpet.and power steering...and mod it out to death..i still need to have it for every day

What offset and tire size are you running? New shocks and struts will do squat for your rubbing issues. Only way to fix it is: get new rims OR add more camber.

I believe tire wear is accelerated by too much toe in or out not camber.

thanks for the help civicsiracer.....the problem like i said is that my tires are 7.5 inches wide instead of 7....and they are 17 in rims....so they are already too big....but the guy at the shop said that if i lower it will be toe out alot i think thats where the tires are angled out not in??.....however it will hold weight and will be stiff because the shocks will be adjustable....but if i camber it,it will make it look better...then it will rub because the tires are too wide....maybe my stock struts are just too loose and new ones will make it better.like i said when im alone or have one person in the car with me no rubbing on any corners..but with three people or more..its a really bad rubbing on corners...even if im going like 10 miles an hour..and i want to lower my car really bad....but its like i will have luggage in my car from time to time and people so i need the best option for downforce/looks/ and practicality..
and by offset i dont know exactly??? you mean just factory specs for a honda civic??? the new rims are 215/40/ 83W

You need new wheels plain and simple. 7J width is the max you can go on a Honda. You can go 215 width tires if running "16s, but you'll still have rubbing issues. Whoever sold you the wheels should have known about you can't be wider than a 205 tire when on "17's or larger wheels when they are on a Honda, obviously they were just out to make some $$$ off of you without a care in the world. :rolleyes: Your only other option is to put back in your stock suspension since camber won't help you any, but make things worse rather. I'd sell the wheels and start over fresh IMO. Good luck.

And by offset, CivicSiRacer meant for tire size you are running 215/40 17 we already know, but offset is usually a number something like +45 or +38 or some two digit number like that with a "+" sign before the number. It'll be essential for us to know that number to be able to better find a solution to your problem. Example, my 15x6.5 wheels have an offset of +38 Offset will depend on the design of a particular wheel and it's size.

sorry i also forgot silver civic that i havent lowered it yet....thats why i was asking.....because i will either be way toe out or have to camber and rub or just live with it til i can get new rims

thanks si racer.......i guess ill just have to wait a minute and get some new rims/tires..im thinking about getting 16's...cause alot of my buddies are going down to 16's from 17's cause all their rims are getting bent and scratched on curbs....
what size rim/tire do you think will be optimum for performance??
also i have i one more question.......i cant launch my car......so its impossible for me to race anyone that will be close.....i have those champiro 215/40 z rated....however when i get it up to 4500 or 5000 rpms and try to launch i cant get even a single chirp....and it starts studdering.....like its trying to catch up with the engine then starts going...it doesnt just squeal??is that my tire????or air pressure?? because my stock tires i could launch easily...but with my new ones i cant get a launch so i cant race..it feels like im driving over train tracks for a second then goes...i thought it was because i was on uneven ground..but then i realized it happended everywhere..

It's because of you wheels. When you have bigger wheels and stickier tires, you can't spin or chirp them like you could with stock wheels/tires. "17 wheels are heavy, and so you shouldn't expect much with them.

well silver civic.......is their any way to comp for my tire size......cause i cant ever beat any one off the line.....and my vtech cant make up in the top end for a slow start...any tips or tricks for me?

You need the lightest wheel possible when you auto-X race like I do with my car since unspring weight on the ends of the axles is most important for handling performance and grip on curves/turns. I have Yokohama ES100 tires, which are one of the stickiest street tires that handle rain well on the market, and unless I'm on wet ground, I can't get them to spin or even chirp off the line. I wouldn't want to with expensive tires like than anyways. But it doesn't hinder my launch any either that I've ever noticed. Wheels spin hurts a launch more than a direct start with no spin.

I loved the way 17s looked but my car is much faster with 15s. I might get some 16s for everyday driving, but my competitors for autocross all run 15s. I run 15x7" with 205/50x15" because the diameter is a bit smaller than stock so the car takes off the line a bit quicker ALTHOUGH on the highway at 80mph my car is revving at 4500rpms compared to stock tires (195/55x15") at the same speed is around 4200rpms.

A wheel that is 1lb per 1" is a pretty light rim but you also pay more money for lighter rims.

thanks for the info....sorry about bugging you with the pm...thanks..i think i wanna get some 16's....well see though...and i think my offset is 40..on my rims....so i should get rid of them for that and being too wide....thanks for the all the help....

I've got some new 17x7 rims with +40 offset. Are they going to work okay on a 98 Civic EX? The wheel wasn't available in any other offset. Planning to lower it about 1.5 inches and run 205/40-17 tires.
