i have a big problem. i just brought a 1990 240sx from my parents for a 1000 dollors. the car is in pretty good shape and the engine had about 150,000 miles on it. i was wondering if i should replace the ka24de of another car and turbo-charge it or but a s13 sr20det engine in from japan.

i wanted to know what is the max horsepower i will get out of it if i'd renforced the engine and how much horsepower will i get out of a
sr20det engine. also how much would each one cost.

if anyone has any info on this
thanks for helping

You could do either. But with 150000 miles on it, I wouldn't feel real comfortable putting a turbo kit on the KA. The KA engine has a cast iron block with somewhat thin cylinder walls, and people who have put turbo kits on their cars have their "innerds" forged to be able to hand the boost w/o blowing the walls or pistons. It would probably be worth your while to do the SR swap--more power, and hopefully better reliabity and ability to further modify the engine. If your car were a 1991 or newer, I would consider installing a turbo kit, since they are dual-overhead cam. The 1989 & 1990 KA's were single-overhead cam. Both engines can take quite a beating, but it may cost you less to do the SR swap than to rebuild your KA24E and then install the turbos.

Just my .02 though :)

Oh God, that undying question. Thanks for taking the words out of my mouth and saving me another white hair, 96SEChick. :flash:

Sorry, but you can't put an SR20DET into a 1990 Nissan 240SX. 1991 is the first year that you can swap in that engine. I know it sucks, but look at the engine out of a 180 SX because you can't drop in the SR20. I figured I would tell you before you made the mistake of buying an SR20DET and finding out it won't fit! Get the 180SX engine because it will fit.

I know it sucks, but look at the engine out of a 180 SX because you can't drop in the SR20. I figured I would tell you before you made the mistake of buying an SR20DET and finding out it won't fit! Get the 180SX engine because it will fit.

Yes, you can put a SR20DET into a 90, i have an 89 hatch and this winter either a SR20DET, or a RB25DET is going into my car. i already have everything ripped out just waiting on the engine

justa bout any engine can go into any car if yo want.....

Sr20det's go fine into 89-91 240's...... I've heard that the power steering lines need to be reworked and thats about the only added work versus swapping it into a 91-94

89-91 Jspec cars came with the Ca18det so if you wanted to swap that engine I would get the earlier 240's because it would be more bolt in(you probably wouldn't have to mess with the power steering lines, but I don't know much about Ca18 swaps)

If you can afford the sr20, that is the best course of action. The KA24 has this tendancy to have been designed for use in trucks. As such, it is not a very fun engine in a sport coupe. Even my burnt, old CA20 has been found to be more fun than the KA24. It may be on the expensive side because of custom mounting and parts, but the sr20 will give you a great driving experience.
BTW, for those of you who think that an sr20 wouldn't be possible in a 90 240sx, I have been told that it would be possible, and not too costly (ie: under 10k), to stick anything from an S-15 sr20det to an rb26dett in, of all things, my 84 200sx.

i would go wit da sr20det cause ur ka has over 150,000 miles and u would have to reinforce the engine to take mor then 10psi of boost
wit the sr motor it can take 14.7psi safely the only mods u should make is a upgraded furl pump and a boost controller

according to www.phase2motortrend.com:

S13/S14 SR20DET:
Direct drop in for USDM 1989-98 240SX's.
For 89-90 240SX
-Gauge cluster must be upgraded to 91-93 S13 240SX or use the cluster off Jspec Silvia/180SX's because the tachometer off the 89-90 240SX are not compatible with the SR swap.
-Power steering must be customed to fit the SR20DET or change to 91-93 240SX power steering system.
-Custom A/C bracket is needed to use the factory compressor on the SR20 or custom hardlines to fit the SR compressor.
-The drive shaft for 89-90 S13 will be alittle short but can still be used for the SR swap.

Hey, you want a real swap (not doggin the SR20 or nothing) but go with the RB engine (RB20DET or RB25DET out of a Skyline).

I did the swap early in the year and I must say I love the results. My car runs a 12 at 114 mph in the quarter now and I am running stock boost (7psi) The RB25DET (which I have) can handle far more boost than the SR20DET. I have seen it pushed to 25 psi on stock internals with no damage.

The RB20DET clips are a bit less expensive than the SR20DET clips. I sell them for $2250. But for they are two more cylinders than the SR20DET which allows for far more hp potential.

Now, the RB swap is as easy as the SR swap despite what others say. If you want a picture of it, go to one of my first post that I ever did.

All you gotta do is take your old engine out and put the new one in....switch tranny mounts backwards and add a spacer. Cut hood reinforcement (which isn't visible from outside) and put power fans on it instead of the engine fan.

If anyone has any questions about the swap, please email me.

SR20DET guy -

The RB20DET came in RWD and AWD set ups. The RB25DET came in RWD, and the RB26DETT came in AWD. AWD isn't hard to convert to RWD, it simply takes disconnecting wires and/or rods. There are no major mods to make the 20 and 25 fit. The 26 requires a few mods because of the twin turbo setup. As far as wiring goes, all you have to do is keep your stock 240 interior harness - biggest piece of advice I can give. Then you run the separate skyline harness which only runs the engine. I can get clips of the RB25DET and I have one coming in soon. Weight distribution is great. It is about 55 rear, 45 front. Any more questions, let me know!

Any shop can do the swap, it's not too hard. I had a quote for mine done at $1200, but I chose to do it myself. It isn't too hard of a swap, I can help you through it if you choose to save some money lol. I know a guy in the NYC area....lives in Buffalo, that may be able to give you some help with it. I sell the clips for $3000 if you want one. Then adding driveline and $1200 for a shop, you would be below $5k....IM me if you like.....NightXCZ77

SR20DET is the way to go. SR20 is a reliable engine and you can get lots of power from it. Also, the SR20 is great if you drift.:D

im 17 years old and I just bought a 1995 240SX as my first car. I've been upsessed with Nissans for a few years now. I was wondering how hard would it be to swap the Ka for the Sr myself. I have my own engine hoist so thats no problem. I would like to order the engine from srswap.com anyone deal with them? How fast do you guys think its possible to do this without ever doing it before. I have swapped a VG30DE for a VG30DET in a 300ZX Z31 so i think that could be considered a bit of practice. How hard is the wireing. The only reason why i would do it myself is because I dont have the money considering that there is always the possibility that theres something wrong with the engine.

its not so much the revival of the old thread as it is the stupidness of posting what he posted seeing as there is a sticky on this forum entitled "RB SWAP FAQ", which clearly would be the first place to look if you were wondering about swapping an RB engine!

and dont worry, im not an inmature dick. im not an immature dick either. im a mature dick.

and theres also a sad little person inside of me too, he is sad because if you really are going to put the rb25 in your car thats tight, but its just too bad you were too dumb to find the FAQ. And duh! any swap is fucking possible jesus christ come on now use some common sense.

wow another reason why the 240sx forum looses members who actuall know things, you can thank all the newbies for that, wow and to think i didnt even curse or say some thing bad, i plainly said to stop brinig back old threads, and i added the word newbie, well corect me if im wrong but that what it says on your a/f name "newbie" and who is more imature now cursing out a older member that has been here longer then what you have and has contributed alot more then you, so its would be best to mind our own business if you want your stay here to last, well at least some prople see where im comming form, looks like we put a end to another newbie that comes here and thinks hes big and bad... o0o man..
