I have a 95 Nissan Pathfinder with a ticking sound coming from under the dash area on the middle/passenger side. It ticks when i accelerate, especially if in gear. It seems to tick at every RPM, it sounds kinda like a motor cycle. Its gotten louder in the past month. Please help me. Please tell me which system it might be and which ones it can't be/isn't likely to be. Could it be the engine, rings, fuel sys, air intake sys, exhaust sys, flywheel, tranny, what? The little exhaust gasket thing is under the driver's seat so it's not that. Plus I welded that shut. Please help. thanx

Hey, go to search at the top right of the screen and in the "search for posts by a specific user" field type in 95pathfinder and you will find an article in the honda forums about a civic with like 39 posts called "buzzing when acclering". I've posted in there. It addresses the problem we were having. Check out my posts and the replies that came after it. Everything before my first post is useless.

Someone online told me that nissans are noutorious for developing a loose timing chain at about 80 thousand miles. He said that I should install a new timeing chain. My SUV uses dual chains on a V6, a kit is about 140 bucks. It should be an easy do it yourselfer. He said that my tourqe converter is probably bad and that I should take it out and have it rebuilt for about 80 bucks. I hope this helps.

Hmmm, I may be ignorant but I didn't realize timing chains were an option on a P-finder. My '95 has (one) belt. You say "my SUV" is that a P-finder? Now you got me curious... :confused:

Pathfinders since 1995 with the VG series engine use a single timing belt (as in rubber belt). Consequently the belt itself is unlikely to cause the ticking sound. It could however be the idler pulley that provides tension for the belt.

Yeah, ok, that makes sense. I know there a some 4cyl that have chains but not on a '95 V6. Anyway, I agree that the tensioner may be bad. Rule of thumb, change it with the timing belt. But I would suspect more along the lines of a cracked or warped manifold. '95's are notorious for this problem. 9 times out of 10, the Right side goes first. Usually starts out ticking upon a cold start-up then goes away as the motor warms. Mine's doin' it (has 150k miles and on it's 3rd timing belt as of 142k), need to take care of it before it gets worse. Manifolds aren't cheap. I wonder how many miles you have on yours and what the history is.

Keep in mind that even though the ticking may seem like it's goin' away when the motor warms, it's letting you know (a sign) that it'll turn into a major problem if not taken care of. Thus, resulting in exhaust leaks, ticking, whatever, whenever, and I personally don't wannna find out by waiting. Good luck. And please lemme know what ya find.

Found it! Exhaust leak by the engine, I can feel the hot air coming out. Thanx for your help. I hope this helped someone else.

It idles a little funny too so i'm going to check that "tensioner" thing. I have 80 thousand miles and that manifold is cracked and warped. My mechanic friend told me that I have to check under the shiny metal thing (manifold i believe) to find out where its leaking from. Thanx so much!

I'm glad you found yer ticking noise, however, I don't think the tensioner is going to cause an idle issue. Could be many things, hard to say. What are the symptoms? Check for vacuum leaks?

my engine is also ticking, some1 recommended a heavier oil, wat do you think
