Under normal cold weather conditions and city driving, what gas mileage should a 99 Camry 4 cyl 2.2L auto transmission be getting?

I am getting about 27 City/Hwy driving mine is a 94 2.2L auto though.

Hmm, that's not so good for me. I'm getting about 21 mpg. I wonder if my snow tires are dragging my mileage down. Otherwise, I really need a tune-up. Thanks for your input.

Anyone else know their gas mileage as a comparison?

My 2000 Camry with a V6 gets almost 25 mpg combined city/highway, so I would think the 4 cylinder should get at least that. Not sure if snow tires would have that significant an impact on mileage.

On Friday I stopped in at my local dealer and asked what gas mileage I should be getting with the 99 Camry 2.2L engine. I was told that summer city mileage should be around 30mpg. They said the cold weather will shave about 20 percent off that. Then my snow tires will reduce my mileage even further.

I mentioned that I was receiving about 20-21mpg city. They said that sounded about right.

It seems like I have the same problem. I have a Camry CE (4 Cyl), 2000. The gas mileage is about 18 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. The dealer told me it was normal, is it? did you get any good answers on your 99 Camry?

Also, when driving on the highway with cruise control on, the engine shifts from higher to lower gear abruptly (the shift is not smooth at all), is that normal? I understand that the transmission will shift to increase power, but this shift is too fast that I almost lose control of the vehicle!

I mainly drive highway, but I also get about 25% city driving. Overall I've been getting 31mpg with '97 LE 4cyl/2.2L, so I definitely think you guys aren't getting the right fuel mileage.
