hi all i just bought a spec-v and i was wondering when is it good to race? I have 30k on it right now and what i noticed is shifting. When i had my old car i use to shift at 3000 rpm which was a 97 nissan altima and it was fine, but for the spec-v when i got up to 3000 the engine sounded like it was stressing so does it have anything to do with the mileage, because i had 82k on the altima please need help and if i shift it under 2000 people say that's going to make my car slower in the long run

what? is it manual?? i say you drive it little bit rougher every time. like rev it up alil higher every week. like pick it up to 3,000 everyday of the week, then the next week 3,500 everyday of the week, and so on.it should be able to rev up to redline after like 5,000 miles.

read your manual it'll say when to shift
if you're racing you want to shift at the highest point possible, where you get the most hp(you can actually feel the car pull and then let go) this is usually around 5500 - 6k rpm search for it on the interent it'll say ###hp @ ####rpm that rpm is when you want to shift becuase thats when you'll get the most hp. as far as the milage is concerned- old people can't run as fast as young people.

Why would you shift at the peak hp?
You want the biggest area under the hp curve. It's hard to describe in words really, but you want the highest AVERAGE power b/w where you shift and where the rpm lands in the next gear. Maybe this will be at the peak hp, but I doubt it. On most cars you would shift some distance after the peak to give you the most area under the curve.

lol i really dont since i dont have a tach on my 94 sentra xe. So i juss rip the hell out of it when racing. Prolly not good but the car takes it and still runs strong for 160,---miles. But listen to nacho nissan and sr20de4ever. They know what they are really talkin about.

Yeah, for example: In my SE-R, the optimum shift points get progressively lower as I go thru the gears. It goes like this.

1st: 7500rpm
2nd: 6800rpm
3rd: 6300rpm
4th: 6100rpm

See you're trying to spend as much time as you can in the biggest area of the power curve. Going to redline is only efficient in first because the gear is so short. But in second, if you go past 6800rpm, you're wasting time by being in rpms further away from the HP peak.
