RB20DET in a z31ShinRekka 12-08-2003, 04:23 PM i know this is a 300ZX forum post but no one is in there. I have come to the conclusion that a RB20DET will easily drop into a 300ZX Z31. I am looking for a new project car, i can pick up a 300ZX with a bad engine for mad cheap, like $800 if not less. I could pick up a skyline front clip for a grand w/ a RB20DET So basicly i have enough do buy both and do some upgrades or new paint and what not. I have a questions tho - 1. How much hp does a RB20DET skyline engine have? I look it up and all i find is some number in PS or something 2. Reliability, how good is the reliability with these engines. 3. Do you think they weigh less then a VG30DET, it is one litre smaller. - for those of you wondering how i came with that conclusion, in japan the Z31 was also a 200ZR witch was a 300ZX body with the RB20DET. also i translate japanese pages and alot of Z31's have RB series engines in them. I beleive the RB26DET would also fit in no problem as it is the same shape as the RB20DET. Turbo Thoughts 12-08-2003, 04:44 PM way cool, man. So you'd be building a j-spec 200ZR? I've never heard of them, you JDM-mania people are awesome with respects to knowledge of this cool stuff. z31s are pretty dated looking. i'd rather see a drop into a 240z. heh. stealthj 12-08-2003, 05:38 PM 1. 200 2. dont know, never had...but heard its ok 3. yes of course they weigh less flylwsi 12-08-2003, 06:02 PM I beleive the RB26DET would also fit in no problem as it is the same shape as the RB20DET. same shape yes, but it's also .6 liters bigger. and would most likely have 2 more cylinders, no? that'd be a little tight stealthj 12-08-2003, 06:13 PM same shape yes, but it's also .6 liters bigger. and would most likely have 2 more cylinders, no? that'd be a little tight nah they are both 6 cyl its not exactly a "no problem" setup and its rb26dett not only one T ShinRekka 12-08-2003, 06:28 PM nah its same shape outside totaly, just bigger internals i guess , i dont know how that works. I plan on doing it to a late 80's 300ZX. They dont look that dated espacialy with the strip taillight. I would like probaly either black or shiny red. Also, I do love JDM stuff but wouldnt realy consider myself a maniac. I just want the best for my car and also to be original. I mean of course i'd want a sil80 with kouki tails and a kouki wing and maybe a ca18det under the hood. But thats because it looks awsome and i could build that engine pretty easy. Also the 240Z engine swap has crossed my mind many many times, although the most probable swap i would make would be a L28ET into a 240Z. The only thing i would need would be a early 280Z feul tank and the 280ZX turbo engine and i'd be set. I wouldnt drop in a chevy small block because it would no longer be 50/50 balance. It would be lighter in the front then in the back, not to mention i would like to stay within nissan. I've had bad experiances with the VG30DET so i'd like to take on the RB this time. If its lighter and comes with 200hp it should be as fast as the 80's 300ZX witch comes with 220hp. The RB probaly has more potential and reliability then the VG. So im thinking FMIC, more powerful injectors, ecu tune, exhaust, intake, boost controller, turbo timer, and im set. The Z already has some gauges that would just need to be hooked up to the new engine. I would think i would be in the 275-300hp range, a new turbo and higher boost would get me to 300+hp. about 325hp to the wheels will get me into the 12's i think. I would pick up some handling/ breaking upgrades after that. Maybe some nice panasports and a skyline spoiler. This should take me about a year to complete. Probaly much less. I bet the car would sell for a good amount on ebay. I'd say "300ZX with Skyline Engine swap" and i'd bullshit about how incredibly fast it is and all of the time and effort and money i spent on it. I would think like maybe 10grand, all the people looking for silvia converted 240sx' and see 300ZX! SKYLINE! and try to buy my car. I could just see it now.... infi 12-08-2003, 06:30 PM I look it up and all i find is some number in PS or something hp (english) = horse power ps (german) = pferde stärken horse (english) = pferd (german) power (english) = stärke (german) just a little german lesson :P ShinRekka 12-08-2003, 06:40 PM i know rb26dett, i was typing fast. I could just stick the rb25det transmission to it and it will work find. Im gonna stay away from that any way. RB20DET for me. Seriously tho, i think it would be a no problem installation. Wiring and shit would be a bitch but its all plug and play. Speedo might be dead, but i will just wing it and estimate how fast im going. When i had a SHO it had a dead speedo and i always told the cop that and he'd let me off with a warning. Happened like 6 times or so. If i cant hook that tach up i'll have to go buy the sound of the engine. ShinRekka 12-08-2003, 06:41 PM thanks for the lesson ShinRekka 12-08-2003, 06:49 PM http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/58783Z31club-0a.jpg look at how sick that is, now tell me thats dated. ShinRekka 12-08-2003, 06:51 PM maybe a little, but definitly was ahead of its time. TheLogikal1 12-08-2003, 07:10 PM sick, but dated. If you need info on the 200ZR or 300ZR ask me. stealthj 12-09-2003, 03:40 AM hey..thats Kei's 200ZR-II ...pretty sweet. If you need info on the 200ZR or 300ZR ask me. info/specs PLEASE ShinRekka 12-09-2003, 07:38 AM i would like some info on it, such as does it use different motor mounts other then what the skyline uses? I figure i'll need to get custom exhaust made too. mynismo 12-09-2003, 05:45 PM http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/58783Z31club-0a.jpg look at how sick that is, now tell me thats dated. very, very nice car. is that it??? pretty close to my legendary v8z http://i2.ebayimg.com/01/i/00/f0/27/28_1.JPG i like yours a lot better. nice gunmetals... wooooooooo. also i like how the scoop is in the middle of the hood, and the body kit/spoiler on that thing. awesome. i don't think that's dated at all... just based on an older style body. the z31's look pretty bad stock, but when you put a body kit on them they look absolutely sweet. wingsofwar 12-09-2003, 08:02 PM 200ZR (a.k.a The Soul Synchro Machine) RB20DET (Inline-6 2000cc Twin Cam Electronic fuel injected Intercooled Single Turbo) **note** the RB20 found on the Z31 is slightly different than that of the RB20 found on the skyline. 180ps = 180hp @ the crank stock realistic numbers..your looking at 140-150rwhp 200ZR has a stiff suspension set up, much different from the US-Spec 300zx. its handling is much agressive, and the R200 LSD gives cornering performance a dramatic change from the 300zx. The 200ZR-II came with numerious options...as its labled the Fairlady Z31 Sports package. with white face guages, higher speed limiter, stiffer suspension, LSD, and interior cosmetics. The Front air dam is stock on the the 200zr..but came off when the 300ZR was introduced. (dont know why) Hood has a 1 scoop vent..which is routed to a top mount intercooler which is provided by the skyline powered RB20 engine that sits in its bay. If you are looking into creating such a car, using the 300zx Shell and rb20 engine. You do not need the rb20 from the 200zr but from a skyline GTS..the mounts you WILL need from the 200zr. and the driveshaft. attached with the skyline gts gearbox. I seriously doubt you are going to be able to make a complete 200zr conversion, due to the lack of availible parts. Yet you will be able to fit the rb20 in the Z31 engine bay with little modification. You dont need a new exhaust system, but you will need a downpipe that runs to your cat. although I do recommend getting a new exhaust system due to increased exhaust volume from the turbo. other engines that fit fairlady Z (j-spec) RB20DE RB20DET VG30E VG30ET VG30DE VG20 VG30DET VG30DETT (89+) stealthj 12-09-2003, 08:43 PM stealthj 12-09-2003, 08:46 PM http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-15.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-07.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-04.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-02.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-18.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-20.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-21.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-27.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-29.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-31.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-33.jpg http://chuber.arrutech.com/z31pics/images/200zr-34.jpg sometimes these pics work, sometimes too much traffic...keep refreshing... ShinRekka 12-10-2003, 07:22 AM i can make my own driveshaft as well as mounts.I can also make myself a complete exhaust system. Turbo Thoughts 12-10-2003, 03:51 PM Its beautiful. Still dated. BUT FUCKING MORE GORGEOUS THAN I THOUGHT THEY COULD BE. wow, kick me in the balls and call me shirley for underestimating. Cool cars, guys. Absolutely beautiful works. klohiq 12-10-2003, 09:57 PM http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/58783Z31club-0a.jpg look at how sick that is, now tell me thats dated. Anyone else think of Knight Rider when they saw that car? Just kidding...the car is a lot nicer and don't the 80's ones talk just like kit did if you leave the door open or whatever? Anyhow...the car looks very nice...the best color for it is definitely black... blackbob 09-26-2006, 06:07 PM I got a question why did the Z31(hell damn near all the Z's) practicaly drop from the face of the earth and the skyline and 240 survive ? S13Driftfiend 09-26-2006, 06:45 PM good question, but this thread is ancient lol... and i couldnt tell you, i always loved the Zs blackbob 09-26-2006, 08:24 PM good question, but this thread is ancient lol... and i couldnt tell you, i always loved the Zs You know what happened I was searching up the 200zr and found this post. But I neglected to read the dates..lol S13Driftfiend 09-26-2006, 09:23 PM lol no prob 240SXSlideStar 09-26-2006, 09:38 PM Because most of them look like ass, it's rare to see a nice looking Z31, that black one is sexy as hell though. And the 300ZX is very popular, but not for drifting. The 240 only got popular because of drifting and the Skyline only got popular because of Gran Turismo, the Z33 is taking the glory back though. nissan_240sx 09-26-2006, 11:31 PM almost traded my 240 for a TT z32 T top, but that thing blew up the day I was going to check it out.. I want one slideways... 09-27-2006, 03:35 PM ive been real close to buying a z31 anniversary edition a couple times...the RB swap looks interesting...possible next project found. MetalHeadZaid 09-27-2006, 03:39 PM yeah, that black z looks pretty cool. rarely ever see a nice looking one. i would rather go with a plain old VG-TT swap..keep it road legal! slideways... 09-27-2006, 10:35 PM i can swap in any motor in the world and it will be road legal...with or without emissions equipment. MetalHeadZaid 09-27-2006, 10:55 PM you obviously dont live in NY slideways... 09-27-2006, 11:05 PM nope. minnesota. jesse ventura did away with all our emissions laws. il_draconis_li 09-27-2006, 11:44 PM 200ZRs are pure sex. They arent dated either. For the Z31 and likewise for my S12 SE (chassis of a Silvia), driveline/braking system/engine bay lifted from a Z31. You can put a RB20 into a Z31 without too much hassle. It's a good swap. If you can find 200ZR parts, then it will only make it that much easier for you. CarGuy88 10-08-2006, 09:48 PM ya i agree with wingsofwar (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=24279) thats hella bomb, but if you have the extra cash id go with the rb26det over the rb20det, just cuz its newer(so it wont have to many problems) and it makes more power. but then agian i dont know much about RB20,25,26Det vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
