88 Fox Heating Problem***

Hi i have an 88 fox and after a few minutes my temp gauge goes up and i lose heat, if i pull over and idle in about 5 minutes the temp comes back down and heat comes back. Any ideas what could cause this to happen, any help would be greatly appreciated ive been going crazy trying to figure this out.

Do you get any abnormal RPM sounds? Like as your driving do you get really high revs in idle? My first guess would be to check your temp sensor - make sure that there is enough antifreeze flowing in the car - the sensor may be giving a bad reading causing the heat to be cut off thinking that the engine is too hot to have the heat on - I've never heard of this happening before or it may also be your time thermo switch - hope this helps!
