2 questions: Oil burning smell and Exaust valve glowingRenegade 11-28-2003, 05:45 PM Hi! I hope I'll find solurion here So, I have a 96 Honda Civic 1.6 VTi (160 HP) it has 120.000 km (70.000 miles) on odometer. Oh, and the car is stock. Few days now I noticed that when I'm driving on Hi RPM for some time I can smell motor oil burning. I checked the engine and teh oil isn't leaking anywhere. Our local guys told me, that it could be a sealing on (I don't know what's the word) oil-pan. I didn't noticed anything. I can smell it only when the car is hard driven. And the second thing is, when I pull to a stop and pop the hood and peek on the cat-back exaust (exaust valve?) I see it is glowing red . Is this normal or is it realy something wrong with the (again I don't know the word ) main crankshaft. Friends told me, that my engine is going to "heaven" slowly, becouse the bearings are worn out. I kinda know how to drive a car - if I am driving on Hi RPM, I let the engine running for a while to cool down. I never run the engine over 3.000 rpm when engine is cold and so. Hehe, only my english is quite poor. Sorry for that. I hope you will help me with this one. I'm really worried about this ... Thanks! Renegade 11-30-2003, 12:44 AM ***INFO UPDATE***: My exaust valve in glowing red even if I drive my car normal (up to 4.000 RPM). Some mechanics have told me to check ingnition timing. 1 week ago a had regular service - adjusting valves. Due to this setting, the timming could be wrong? Going to check the ignition today or tommorow. AccordCE8 11-30-2003, 06:21 AM hmm ... first of all i don't get the link 'oil smell' and 'red hot exhaust' to the worn bearings ... i personally don't see the link between the two. or the oil what goes through the 'loose' bearing should cause a smell...i don't know but dont think so (i'm no car mechanic but a 'mechanical engineer' ) i know that a wrong timing / fuel mixture can ruin your cat in the exhaust, the 'not used fuel' in the engine will then burn in the cat. And the cat really gets hot ... so maybe this is the reason for the smell and red hot exhaust. You dont see any oil leaking, so probably no sealing that is broken. When you drive fast for a long time it's normal to have a red hot exhaust so that's no worry. I would advice to go to a honda mechanic, they know the engine the best, and are not more expensive than a 'normal mechanic', and it's likely they have experience with it, and have the proper computer to read out your car and so on. (i'm very lucky to have the best honda mechanic of europe at my local honda dealer, for 2 times he has won the honda challenge, but you don't live near me :( ) Renegade 11-30-2003, 07:09 AM I really would insult of offend my honda mechanic, but he is working at honda dealer, but he can't locate the problem. I called a million or so and some of them told me to, dissconnect the O2 sensor. If the sensor is broken the ECU is delivering too much fuel that is "burning" in the exaust valves. So I'll try do dissconnect the O2 sensor and reset the ECU (dissconect the "-" pole on the battery for a 5 min). The exaust valve is glowing eve if I'm driving at normal RPM - up to 4.000. AccordCE8 11-30-2003, 01:09 PM I dont want to insult your honda mechanic, but it's not a good sign of the capability of him, maybe more experienced mechanics at that dealer can solve the problem? Otherwise it's not a good dealer imo. Renegade 12-01-2003, 07:40 AM OK, here's the deal. Today I dissconnected the O2 sensor and went for a test ride. I was really pushing the car - driving at 7 or 8.000 RPM. When I checked the exaust valve it was OK - no glowing or anything. Later this week I'm will check it again with other O2 sensor. Also there's engine light ON, but I supose that's becouse the computer is reciveing any signals from the sensor. I'm quite sure that the problem is solved. Ohh, yeah. About the smell. On the oil pan the sealing is leaking a bit of oil. The oil drops are directli on the exaust pipe so I can smell that stinky S :disappoin . I will change the seal. AccordCE8 12-01-2003, 01:22 PM Good to hear the news ... so no worn engine :D ofcourse, it's a honda :worshippy :iceslolan Renegade 12-02-2003, 05:34 PM Let it be that-way also in the future - Honda style. :)))) vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
