There is a chirp or squeak happening with my car when I turn slight right.... it is so irritating... It sounds like its in the dash... but I can't isolate it. Anyone else have this issue?

I've heard squeaks while turning before a lot of times it is a dry ball joint or tie rod socket. Have someone listen at the while you turn it.

Could it be coming from the contact rings on the back of the steering wheel? Try shooting a little silicone spray in there while turning the wheel.

Even though it sounds like its in the dash it could still be from the bearings???

What bearings?

What I meant to say was that if it is those things you are saying, it would make a noise that seems like it is in the dash?

My car sounds like a cab.

HAHAHAHAHHAAHHA

If it only does it when turning the wheel, then it's originating from somewhere in the steering mechanism. Is it a sharp chirp or metallic squeak? When I take my foot off my brake pedal, I get a faint chirp. It's either the main arm pivot or the master clevis pin. I've tried lubricating both with different products, but can't get it to stop. I love most aspects of my car, but it's still American made semi-junk. Which is why a once $38k car, at 6 years old, is now worth $5k.

Its like a chirp. Doesn't sound like its in the steering column. Sounds more like its behind the center console. I hate it.

Are you sure it's only making noise when you turn the wheel? If so, why? The center console kick panels are tied together with a sprung steel wire that holds inward tension. Reach in there and gently push and/or pull on a few things and see if it makes a difference.

FrancoT - did you figure this one out? I have the same blasted noise in my '95 and I also have a strong hatred of it. Some days it is louder than others, but it always comes back. I had completely worn bushings in the front end and hoped that it would help when I replaced them, but NO. Did it end up being the steel wire that Indy8 suggested you check out? Thanks, Steve

Sorry middlebrookegt. I still haven't found out what the heck it is. It is the most frustrating thing ever and I can guaruntee that it's something small. I just dumped a bottle of WD-40 all over the right wheel joints etc. I'll see if that works. You have any successess?

For use outside the car in locating noises, try Liquid Wrench. It's a penetrating solution that will quiet anything. Unfortunately it doesn't last as a lube, but will let you know where to.

I will try liquid wrench. I emptied a can of WD 40 on it last night and it still made the damn noise. It's either the steering column or something in the suspension. If anyone finds the solution I would be greatly appreciative.

Even the Liquid Wrench can take a couple of days to penetrate tight spots, especially in cold weather.

Believe it or not, FrancoT - it didn't make any noise today. I drove about 80 miles on neighborhood roads as well as the interstate. As I mentioned I have replaced the bushings on the front suspension - it was rubbing metal against metal when I bought it a month ago. I thought that was the problem at the time since it seemed to depend on whether I was turning right or not and I figured suspension. I'm sure it will come back and I'm going to probe around the kick panels because YESTERDAY it sounded like the middle of the console.

Thanks, Indy8 - an excellent all-around tip. I'll go stock up.

You are lucky, FrancoT!! My Squeak has indeed returned. Did you spray the Liquid Wrench on one area at a time and try to determine where it helped most? Or did you just hose it down all over on the suspension? (I'm not opposed to that at this point myself)

I had the exact same problem. It ended up being a bushing in the control arm. I had the dealer replace it. But before taking it to the dealer, I listened to it and I had passengers listen to it. I took out the bottom of the dash and had someone lie upside down and listen for the squeak and everyone that listened sweared it was coming from the dash. And sure enough it was coming from the control arm. They fixed it and I never heard that squeak again. Now I still have a small squeak that I hear once in a while from that side. But nothing as loud as the control arm squeak. And that is the strut mount. But I can almost guarantee it is the control arm's bushing.

Your shoulder belt assembly has a pick-up which may be causing your squeak.
I thought the squeak in my 2001 was coming from the exterior but turned out to be right behind my left ear whenever the shoulder harness went in and out.

It made a barely distinguishable noise whenever I hit a small bump or moved my shoulder!!

Fix with WD-40.

I had a similar problem in my 2001 Aurora. It turned out to be rocks, gravel under in the plastic shroud underneath. Try removing the plastic push rivets underneath and reomove any rocks. This may not be the problem on your car, but it was on mine. The sound is now gone on mine. It was quite loud.
