Manual shift problemsrmccready 11-26-2003, 11:42 PM My '96 Accord LX has a 5 speed manual transmission and the shift travel is like that of a truck transmission. Lately it takes 9 to 10 tries to get it into reverse. I have removed the center console and cannot see what may have broken to cause the shift pattern to be so sloppy. It appears to be something inside the transmission. The dealer said it would probably cost $400. plus to drop the tranny to take a look. Does anyone know what might be the problem and what are my options? Thanks stopmenot2002 11-30-2003, 11:10 PM does it happen when try to shift into 1-5 gears? if it does then how old is your clutch, the only thing i can thnk of is the clutch need replacemnt, around 500+ goodluck jc2080 12-29-2003, 03:07 PM I have the same problem with my 90 accord ex. it graduately get worse and finally the shift jammed. Later find out the clutch is gone. Replaced the clutch and flywheel the shift is effortless and car runs like new. Cost $660 strodda 12-29-2003, 06:29 PM it could be just a broken gear. theres a gear thats supposed to slide out then going intot reverse and the one on my car was stuck. i could go through 1-5, but it wouldnt budge into reverse. i paid $400 parts and labor. they just took apart another tranny they had and replaced all my synchros as well as that failed reverse gear. now its like butter. bani105 06-04-2004, 11:12 PM I've been experiencing problems with my honda's shifting on 3rd gear. When I turn my car on in the morning, the shifting is fine up until the car starts to warm up. When I go into 3rd gear it grinds at about 5k rpm. When I let the rpm's drop to 2-3k rpm and shift into 3rd it's fine. Also, if I'm driving and I'm in 2nd gear, I'll pump the clutch to take it out of gear, pump again to put it into 3rd gear, I get know grinding. But I doesn't work all the time. I really don't know if it's a tranny problem or a clutch problem. It's really pissing me off. I'm not trying to spend all kind of money on a tranny if thats not the problem. I already installed a new clutch, but still have this problem. bani105 06-04-2004, 11:13 PM I've been experiencing problems with my honda's shifting on 3rd gear. Not enough lube in the trans will cause this also. 94accordVTEC 09-14-2004, 03:19 PM Try changing the gear lube.
