I'm not really sure of this. If it is true it seems like something a hard core racer who has had every other modification done to the car, and they r trying to squeez every ounce of power out of their car. I love my A/C, specially in the summer :grinno: :iceslolan

keep the a/c and live w/out the extra 2-5 hp man.. 600hp drag racers have all that crap removed to shave off precious tenths of a second, but for a daily driver it's hardly worth it. They even lack an alternator so they have to push their cars up to the staging area so the battery doesn't die.. then recharge it after the race.

i got a good few HP out of taking my A/C off. the compressor was locked up so we took it off (85 by the way) and i noticed a large gap under the air filter. so i custom built an intake right down the side of the engine to the bottom of the engine bay. DAMN that increased response. stomped a few good cars off of that little mod.

the removal of the A/C on my ST185, proved to be more than a "HP increase".

Removing anything un-needed in my enigine bay, seemed to help air flow quite a bit. As the engine bay is packed tight.

It's also nice as there is more room to work around the front of the engine...

just tossing ideas out... :)

if your AC works good and you live in a hot climate or somewhere that has hot summers. its not worth removing. my AC was busted so i tore out the whole system. i hardly noticed a power difference but wiht about 35-50lbs off of my front tires turn in is a lot crisper (i noticed it only because i have no power steering. with power steering i wouldve hardly noticed) and my engine runs super cool because of the air flow through the radiator w/o the condensor in the way. but on hot summer days i wish i had a proper working AC even if it means i cant go a whole tenth of a second faster to the next red light.

I am sure after you think about this question really hard, then you will find the answer yourself. If not then just read on.

To remove a functional AC unit is not something a normal daily driver car will do since the AC compressor is not using any power from the engine output when the AC is off. The AC compressor pulley is just free spinning if you don't turn on your AC, so there will not be any power lost unleast you are an anal bastard that is trying to argue about the power to weight ratio.

They even lack an alternator so they have to push their cars up to the staging area so the battery doesn't die.. then recharge it after the race.

interesting.....hum...is this info reliable? You would think that they would leave the alternator in and take out the battery instead since the battery is heavier.

yes, it's considered "running a loss" or "running a complete loss".

Drag bikes don't need recharging. etc.. ;)

Well some guy at the strip told me that because that's what he was doing, and was wondering why all the street car drivers were pushing theirs up the line instead of just keeping them running.
