Not sure what to think about it, but I'd really like to hear these peoples engine and see what they mean by "loud". But its definately not a good thing for Chevy. Maybe they'll take more time now in the R&D room.

Hey, BLUELINE,...does your '02 make the noise?...I'm worried mine will when it gets cold enough, or when I drive up to Taos where its really cold. I do notice a noise when I start it on some cold mornings, but it only lasts for about 10 to 15 seconds and even then I can't hear it in the cab, so I think its an alternator noise.

you can put 4 oz top engine cleaner in each cylinder (warm) and let sit for a few hours to disolve the carbon that is causing the rings to stick. additives in fuel are causing the noise, GM tech for 18 years.

Are you referring to my problem?...The truck has 31k on it so I'd rather not remove the heads if thats what it involves(since its under warranty) Do you think that is my problem and not Piston slap that is the talk of the town these days?

you put the top engine cleaner in through the spark plug holes, use a hose and funnel.

Mine doesn't make the noise that I can hear, or at least not yet. I bought the truck a few months ago and I'm also a little concerned about it making the noise when it starts to get colder. Maybe I'll go out this morning while it's still kinda cool and start it up with the hood open and see if I can hear anything.

For those of us who haven't noticed any noise (yet) would you suggest anything as a preventative measure, such as adding the engine cleaner in with your fuel once a month or something along those lines?

My truck has made the engine noise described since it has about 5k miles on it. I changed the factory oil at about 2000 miles over tofull synthetic, and have run it ever since.

I have complained every time my truck has been in for service, and have been told the noise is normal. I just wonder why normal noise was addressed and fixed in later models. :rolleyes:

Personally I think it is pitiful that GM doesn't straighten this out. I have always thought my engine needed a valve adjustment. I have had the top end engine proceedure done, it helped but did not elimintate the noise.

I live in Alabama, and mine makes the racket for well over the first 1/2 in the morning (severe) and it makes racket all the time. Personally I have never heard of a new engine with a roller cam that made valve clatter that was normal, but I have been repeatedly assured that it is normal, and won't cause any problems.

That Nissan Titan is looking mighty sweet to me.

If it is valvetrain noise it could be as a result of a torn oil pump pick up screen o-ring, this will allow the oil pump to suck in air along with the oil and aireate the oil. This will cause valve noise on initial start up and then dis appear until the oil gets thuroughly aireated again. This is related to 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 liter v8's. I have personally seen and fixed this concern and it makes a difference, the oil pressure still read good but did seem a little overactive when warm and after the engine had been ran at 2,000 to 3,000 rpm for awhile to aireate the oil. This concern has sometimes been overlooked because of all the noise that is considered to be normal so it gets shrugged off with a quick listen and a "yup it's a 5.3 (or 4.8 or 6.0)".
