Hi All,

I'm in the process of removing the water pump and I ran into a snag. I can't get the pulley off. I removed the four bolts, but the pulley won't come off. The pulley is loose and spins. What's the secret? Do I need special tool, puller? I'm a newbie to jeep repair, but learning. Thanks,

-S

Hey S,
I just finished doing the water pump on my 1991 Cherokee, after you take the 4 bolts off, the main pulley should just pop right off. There should be another smaller looking pulley behind the main pulley left. Not sure if that is what you mean?? That does not come off, it is attached to the water pump. When you buy a new water pump that is on it.
You do need to take off the main pulley before you unscrew the water pump because there are 4 bolts. You can email me if you can't figure it out because I just went through this last weekend.

I'm going this same route currently with a 95 Jeep Cherokee that has spent it's whole life in upstate new york salt and snow...the pulley gets stuck on with rust. I had to tap the center with a hammer and a screwdriver around the "hub" where the pressed pulley meets the water pump...then a little pry action and it popped right off.

Rust has been my only problem with repairs on this Jeep so far...and it stinks to go to a SoCal salvage yard and have the parts fall into your hands that you have to soak and pry on for hours at home to get off! :-)
