In general, Skylines are a big family of sport luxury sedans and coupes. The GT-R is only the high performance variant. Sort of like how BMW has the lower level 3-series models, then an M3.

The GT-R appears to be intended as more of a GT or Grand Tourer car, like the Supra. It had some luxury, but also a lot of performance. The recent GT-Rs have been too heavy to be a 'sports car,' like say, the FD3S RX-7. The Fairlady Z and Silvia had that role taken care of.

alot of people used the original R32 GTR in racing series and they thrashed all the big over budgetted Ford and Chevy Teams in Aus and stuff Supra's etc in Japan. So thats mainly why you only see RWD R34s racing in JGTC etc.

If ur talking performance wise, the R34 (GT-R) is an all around car. The AWD is great for the track and strip. The twin Turbos are also great for both. The RB26 is also one of the best engines their is. The has a great top end speed, and can get there pretty quick. The Skyline R34 has outperformed all of it's competitors in every form of competition. (stock normal sports cars. No Supercars like Saleen S7 and the CC8)

It's following the footsteps of R32 GT-R which was developed to race in Group A. If you do a search you will find a lengthy post about the history of the legendary Gibson R32 GT-R race cars.

then i wouldnt be here.
then porche drivers would continue thinking how superior their cars are.
then a large part of history would be gone.
then nissan would not be so famous.
i dont think the jgtc would be invented.

ZZII you better get your facts right dude, I have a lot of respect for GTR's but as you said "the skyline GTR R34 has out performrd all of its competitors in every form of competition" I DON'T think so, it hasn't out performed the legendary 2JZ GTE SUPRA specially in Japan and the US. Look up the stats in Japan and the import category in the US and tell me who is kicking ass... SUPRA obviously.

The GTR can drift too...it's one of the few AWDs that do it pretty well...it's also one of the only AWS cars that can drift...maybe not as well as a trueno, but that's a weight issue mostly. And in most cases the GTR has a fairly high rear bias...until it starts slipping...and even then most of the power is still at the rear wheels...

i think u misread the question... he asked what is it "made" for... and the skyline was definitly not meant for drifting and the only one that does it well is the gts-t which is rwd...
