I don't actually know, as I don't have that photo etch kit (didn't even know that there is one!), but I have used these real photos from Astra V8 Coupe 2001 inside in detailing, maybe they could be useful.

And as you propably noted, all cars did not have them. The Tamiya model is btw the early 2001 model, the car was changed in quite the beginning of the season, so only the very first races had the front fenders as they are in the Tamiya kit, later they changed them to be longer for the rest of the season 2001, as they changed also the part under the doors with a diagonal plate. It would be quite easy to convert the Tamiya kit to the later part of 2001 which was the look for the most races. When looking lots of photos of the real cars from 2001, some of the cars seem to have those plates in some of the races and some not, even they had them in some races... Makes me wonder? OK, race cars do change a lot during seasons.
The Tamiya Astra V8 Coupe DTM model presents the car in the way it was only in the first 2 races in 2001, Hockenheim and Nürburgring. In the third race the plate in the hole under the door was introduced and in the 4th race the front fenders were changed to longer ones.
Basically the kits show the cars in the Hockenheim race trim, as the Winkelhock car has the Gone in 60 seconds decals, which were used only in that one race.
Some photos still from the real cars:

The Winkehock car in the 1st Hockenheim race in 2001, with the Gone in 60 seconds decals. This is the real car for the Holzer team model. Note that the holes in the front bumper are missing from the real car in this early model, they were introduced in the 2nd race, but this car didn't have anymore the movie posters in that race..., but the sides are like in the Tamiya model. A small mistake from Tamiya.

Reuter's Team Phoenix car in 2nd race 2001 in Nürburgring. This car is identical to the Tamiya Phoenix model. Has even the openings in the front bumper.

This is the Team Holzer Winkelhock car again, now frim the third race in 2001 from Oschersleben. Now the new side plates are in place in the holes under the doors, but the front fenders are still short. Now also this car has the new front bumper with holes. This car also has those metal plates in the roll cage for the first time afaik.

Reuter's car from the 4th race in 2001, now with also the long front fenders and extra air spoilers in the front bumper. This is also the design for the rest of the season, except for the Sep-11 solidarity paint scheme after the incident later 2001 with black sides of the roof and the roof pillars.
OK, now I maybe proved that I know too much about the Opel race cars? :icon16: I have also seen several of these cars live...
And my own Astra model (the pic has been here before too)
