I own a 90 Jetta, im interested in turboeing this car. It currently has the 8 valve 1.8L.
How much boost will this old thing hold? Or am I better off doing a swap?

depending on condition and mileage of the engin you can turbo the engine, to find out the condition of the engine just run a standard compression test, the compression specifications can be obtained from a chiltons or bently repair manual, also check to be sure the fuel system is in perfect operating condition because if a turbo car leans out (less fuel than needed) serious engine damage can accure. With all checking out ok, a good starting point for a turbo build up would be from a TDi engine most parts will bold right up with little or no modding

Okay but, it's a gas engine. If the compression is okay, how much boost is a safe amount?
Do you know where I can find a fuel computer?

The ECU should be under the dash around the passenger seat if I'm not mistaken

hi all, i'm new and was wondering the answers to a few questions regarding an engine swap here is a copy of the posted questions from another forum


' hi ppl, i'm from Burton UK and am owner of a rickety 1990 silver jetta syncro, its got the standard 1.8 8v lump in there with 120kmiles on it, its leaking into the gearbox so i thought this would be a good excuse to go for a 1.8t swap and i found an audi S3 1999 block with drive shaft propshaft gearbox, not sure on it's mileage. i'm interested in doing this swap myself over the next months, I c plenty of people have done the swap into a jetta so any advice would be great.
also wondering what sort of power i can put through chassis without damaging it, same with engine, what sort of things would need uprating in that, the s3 block is quite strong as far as i know. anything like a workshop manual for 1.8t engine, syncro/quattro systems would be useful if anyone knows of any? On the jetta as it is might be asking too much so i have the restoration manual i will follow first, anyone any advice? as you can tell i'm just learning, any help would be good, '

ack... if any of you really need to be asking these questions, then you should NOT be doing and turbocharging or engine swapping yourself. Take it to a well-known garage and have them do it for you, otherwise your car will never run again.

Also, an engine compression test is just one of many tests that need to be done to your car before turbocharging it. To put a turbo on a 14 year old car with the original engine, without first uprating the internals or at least swapping in a refurbished engine, is absolutely idiotic.
Please shoot yourselves.
