Hi,

I am int he process of saving up for a car within the price range of 1500-2000 dollars.
Maybe not in the best cosmetic condition but with a good tranny and engine.
Well anyways, i have a 90' Civic that has 92hp lol.
I want something that has 2 doors and i dont have perference domestic or import.
It has to be a 5 speed tranny no AUTOs for me.
I was lookin at a few Dodge Daytonas on Autotrader.com and they look kinda interesting.
Are they highly moddable?
I want something that would be able to kill ricers on the streets around here. Do any of you guys own or ever own a Daytona?
Thanks

daytona's aren't that fast. the only cheap fast cars are prolly 91+ 240sx's, or old school dsm

Well, I kinda got down to 2 types of cars.
Either a 90-94 non-turbo DSM eclipse/laser or a 84-89 Dodge Daytona non-turbo.
They both have the same amount of stock hp.
The Daytona probably is a little faster. because the base eclipse only has 92hp with a 1.8 liter (non GS)
The Daytona has a 96hp 2.2 Liter engine but wins with 135ft/lbs of torque.
Ones domestic others import.
So im not sure.
Which would u pick.
I kinda like the looks of the Daytona better and also another reason is beacuse alot of people around here have 1st gen DSM's.
I kinda wanna be unique. As long as the Daytona with I/H/E can beat the local ricers around here and still be a dailty driver I would be happy with it.
Thanks

5.0 Mustang's are pretty quick and can be made really fast for cheap. However if you have $2000 right now maybe you could do an engine swap, but I dont know how much it would run you. You could probably do it for under that and the you would have a quick car.(prolly not as quick as the 5.0 though)

I agree with a mustang, its the cheapest way to get a fast car but if you like the daytona get it, personally I like the daytona's looks but its a little too slow.

I always like the way the Daytona looked even though they aren't real fast or a lot of mods out for them(I know of).
Cheap hp already there, 5.0 Stang but for $2,000 it will be visual rough.

from a performance web site... 0-60 and 1/4mi times

1990 Dodge Daytona ES 8.4 16.2
1990 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 6.4 14.9
1991 Ford Mustang GT 7.3 15.6
1988 Ford Probe GT 7.3 15.6
1991 Nissan 240SX SE 7.9 16.1
1989 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 7.2 15.8
1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX 6.9 15.2
1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo 6.9 15.4
1992 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo 7.1 15.0
1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD 6.8 15.1

my pick would be an old school eclipse. don't get a daytona if your going for speed, they really aren't that fast. look at the laser's.... they are more than one sec faster which is a hugeass time when you are looking for a fast car. they are almost as fast as the overpopulated 5.0's.

Well, you guys definetly have changed my mind about the Daytona.
I like the looks, but im really looking for speed.
I love the way 1st gen DSM's look and they are pretty cheap.
Going for around 1500-2000 for one.
I probably will get an DSM eclipse 90-94 or a Plymouth Laser 90-94.
Non Turbo, because they are hard to find for 1500-2000 in turbo version.
Also, insurance is kidna high for a 17 year old.
Im really leaning towards the 1st gen Eclipse or Laser right now.
Someone told me about a few Mitsubishi Starion's he has seen at the local street races. he said they are pretty fast cars. ut I have yet to find one for around $1500-2000
So as of now Im going towards the 1st gen DSM's.
THanks

That looks like this guy called e34_biturbo's car from Bimmerforums. Fast-ass car.

I hope I'm not too late to change your mind back to the Daytona.

The Daytona is just what you're looking for, inexpensive speed. Not only are they inexpensive to buy but they are also inexpensive to make faster. All you people saying that the Daytona is slow need to stop talking about it because you've made it clear you don't know much about the Daytona.

Granted the stock N/A Daytonas aren't fast at all including the 3.0L V6. What you want to look for is the Daytona Turbo Z with a Turbo II. They come with a 2.2L I4 Turbocharged and intercooled engine. It uses a Garrett T03 turbo. They only came with a five speed manual if you find the Turbo II model. The five speed that it comes with is a Getrag five speed called the A-555. They are forged racing tranmissions and cost about $4,200 new. It can handle what ever you will be able to throw at it. Stock the have been underrated at 174 HP and 200 ft/lbs of torque and with a little less than a couple of grand you can have one running in the 12s in the 1/4 mile. These engines take VERY well to mods.

If you want more info just ask. Hell I can help you find one, but don't listed to these guys on the Daytona, they have no idea what they are talking about.

He said a 1500.00-2000.00 budget and fast, to me that doesn't scream daytona turbo, as they don't come cheap. But you could see if this guy still has his for sale, if your willing to have it shipped or travel.

Actually it does.

You can find a descent Turbo Z for around $1,500 and they run 14s out of the box. Trust me on this, I know, he would be killing ricers all day in that.

Just be careful about buying ANY turbo car.

Well I guess you've done more research than me, I was just basing my opinion on the fact that I had been on a search for a turbo daytona for a while and came up with nothing under 3,000 and the only ones I could find were a few thousand miles out of my traveling distance. I guess they're great since no one seems to want to part with theirs.

I got a Daytona. It kills more than ricers too.
I've recently raced an 86' Iroc camaro 350 LT1, smoked him at 120mph.
