2001 Tahoe tire size

I have a 2001 Tahoe 4x4 and all of the publications that I see online state that the standard tires/rims combo for this vehicle is 265/75/16. The sticker on my door states that I have 245/75/16 on a 16x6.5 inch rim. Now the actual factory tires that are installed on my ride are 245/75/16 on a 16x7.5 inch rim.
I want to get some bigger tires without having to get a lift kit or any other mods but I am having conflicting recommendations from tire dealers. One dealer will only install a 265/75/16 while another dealer says that a 275/70/16 is the max size I can get and yet another dealer says I can get a 285/75/16. The problem being that each one thinks that they have recommended the maximum tire size for safety and/or without having mods based on my vehicle and rim size.

Any help on this would be appreciated. I would prefer the 285's but the other two dealers insist they are not safe.

Hey joey the man is right. I had 285's on my 2000Z71 and they rubbed, and left no room for clearance, or at least not much. I bottomed em out in the driveway very loudly at 2 mi an hour. Your getting good advice the 265's fit perfect. By the way i have 17" inch 2004 tahoe rims and its perfect. I wouldnt do the lift if it was me. They create creaks, easier tip over, and many other problems. Just trying to help you not make the mistakes i made. The tahoe Z71 and 4wd models can use 16 and 17 inch rims. I think that was an option on your year.

Hold on now there is an option. I got a 2001 2x4 and I'm running 285/75/16 on my stock wheels, i did tighten the torrion bars a little to level out the profile (w/ a little bit stiffer ride but not much to complain about) and it rubs only going lock to lock. It was the cheapest and best upgrade i have done for my truck. Go for it, just get those bars tightend.

Do you have a picture of your Tahoe on 285's?
