Confused about the D16Y7....

First of all, I was just curious about developments in the turner world.

I stumble across some forums discussing the "potentials" of the D16Y7 engine. Now, knowing that an automatic transmission plus the Y7 engine makes a really bad combination, I'm just thinking what ARE the "potentials" of this engine.

Couple of years ago, I was interesting in tuning this little commuter up but was pretty must disappointed at the response of "swap the engine". I don't plan to swap until my engine blows up. So, I've pretty much given up on most mods.... but now..

So, what exactly are people doing with their Y7 engines? And what kind of increased performance would be expected? Honestly, I wouldn't mind a little boost on my little commuter. Especially if I feel sluggish while carry 2 people in the car with A/C on.

Thanks!

People like me with the Y7 engine are swapping it out :D

and boost would be my second choice, can't go wrong with turbo.

If you have a ton of money you need to get rid of, turbocharge it. Otherwise save up and SWAP.

Im not gonna start on swaps. ;) I'll just say it's the easiest way to get an extra 30-40 hp. ;)

We can start with your tranny first... You can either swap out for a D-series manual tranny, or if you like your auto, you can opt to get a Level10 or TCI torque converter replacement. It'll crank up the stall speed of the tranny by about 500 RPMs, and give it WAY quicker shifts, in some cases quicker auto shifts than one can do by hand with a manual.

As for your motor, I have the same exact one so you aren't alone. :p What I plan on doing is getting a cam here soon from www.deltacam.com which should up things by about 15hp or so, and only for a mere $65. :D You can swap out heads and pistons to chang compression ratios for various setups. If you get a sleeve kit or block guard, you can boost that motor up to and even past 300hp! Without sleeving, the motor can handle up to about 200hp before ANY internals like the crank, rods or pistons need to be upgraded. I've seen a couple D15 motors withstand 220 whp with a 50shot of nitrous on stock internals, but any higher and all hell would break loose inside there. I'm also planning to turbo my motor down the line here as well. Nothing that will shatter track times, but something to give it more umph, so about a 50-60hp gain is what I'm looking for. Nothing that would require swapping of internal parts since I'd keep the boost to stock friendly pressures.

swap a D16Y8 intake manifold on, CAI, header, exhaust. that should put you about 110-115hp.

You could swap a SOHC VTEC head on the block, wiht the y8 manifold and bolt ons, and be around 130-135hp.

You could also throw a shot of nitrous, 35 or 50 shot.

The D16Y7 engine with a D16Y8 intake manifold is pretty similar to the older D16A6 engine, only the Y7 has bigger valves so you should be quicker than a d16a6, which is 108hp. One of the things i would definately recommend is getting the d16y8 manifold. the Y7 manifold has little to no plenum and is not very good for horsepower gains.

I'd say get a SOHC VTEC head and intake, I/H/E, stage 2 zex cam.. you should be around 145-150hp or so. a lot of these mods can be had with great deals. search around.

hmm i'm wondering can i do the same to my little d15b7... which intake manifold, throttle body.. can i swap into it to make/handle some good gains? if any... right now I'm running only Intake and exhaust... gains are okay.. but more is better
