I was thinking about scratchbuilding some rims. Has anybody made tires or modified there tires? How did you make them?

I just read an article in the SA Contest Annual 2003 where the guy that built the corvette on the cover (Drew ?) made the tires tread using PVC pipe, and the tire sidewalls by vacuforming over another mold. The sidewalls were then glued to the tread and blended together.

Not sure if I totally understood it correctly, but it sounded impressive to me...

Wow, that does sound impressive! I need to find that article.

Did the guy say how he made the tread?

Wasn't that a 1/12 vette though?

Yep, I think it was 1/12. If I remember correct, he hand carved the tread.

Got the article: Scale Auto 2003 Contest Annual, page 50, 1963 Corvette Grand Sort 1/12 scale by Jim Drew. He estimated 3400+ hours put into it!

You can cast an existing tire, but it's easier and cheaper to buy another set of tire from the manufacturer.
The cast tire parts can be coated with liquid rubber dip-in can or spray to simulate the rubber like look.

However, I haven't yet found a good way of hand carving the pattern in 1/24 scale. Anyone? Or any link?

I could spent countless hours doing it with an x-acto :icon16:
