Q: Whats the best troubleshooting book for volkswagen engines?

I picked up a Chilton Book that was sealed in clear plastic cover. I wasn't able to check inside to confirm what was written on the back. I found out the hard way that it didn't contain anything on troubleshooting engine problems. I also noticed that Volkswagen Beetle troubleshooting books are hard to find. I don't wnat to waste any more money on junk. If you know of a very good book that explains what to do in order to repair each given situation that might arise please let me know at johnchristom@aol.com. My engine is hard to start and when it does start it backfires. This is my first Volkswagen. I don't know anything about Volkswagens.

Assuming you have an older air cooled Beetle, the Chilton and Haynes manuals are just about worthless. The original Bentley shop manual is the best, and John Muir's manual is pretty good.

I haven't worked on the stock solex carbs in ... well, a really long time. Sounds like it could be a problem with either the choke or accelerator pump. You might want to ask over at http://www.shoptalkforums.com/

Trying to find info on replacing a '72 VW bug accelerator cable. It just seemed to break off. The end part that sticks into the pedel is missing do I have to replace the whole thing? How do you fish it thru? Thanks for the help guys

Subscribe to www.alldatadiy.com that is what my mechanic buddiees use. Most extensive troubleshooting and diagnostics ever. Just like walking into VW dealer and looking on their computer screen, except you are behind the keys.
