I know theres a 1:12 F1 out there, I've heard its made by Minichamps. I've read that only 2,000 exist, all have been sold, and the price originally was $480. My situation is that a hobby store I know of actually has one !!! It's dark green and is out of box. The price is about $350 and I only have $500! It sounds like a good deal but I'm not willing to drop my wallets weight that much. If your considering buying one, I would check out the review here: http://www.diecast.org/diecast98/html/asp/list_reviews/xq/ASP/id.MP530-133127/qx/reviewpix.htm

Does anybody have this model? If so, please post more pics! I've only seen that one sideview of it on the internet. Also, is it really worth the money? Should I buy it?!

it's an "official McLaren Collection" model, so it's approved by mclaren, models with that badge are very good. it's made by minichamps, and they still have it in their latest catalogue, i can order one @ my local model shop, maybe you should ask, i was offered one about half a year ago, for 300 euro's, but i had some debts with my parents, they said maybe later, so i have 2 work for 2 months or something to get, maybe i will one day

i think it would be great to spend some money on these 1:12 mclarens.
when i searched them 1 month ago , they cost around 300 - 350 euros , but in a few years...........................

then you'll have to spend much more , i think....

it's an "official McLaren Collection" model, so it's approved by mclaren, ...

I don't understand why they approved such "high detailed model" which has the blinker inverted.

I have seen only one F1 (XP4) and one (or two) GTR with this inversion ...

I find this model too expansive, because, for me, Minichamps has made a mistake ...

Peloton25

Yes, I have one and think it's an excellent model that every McLaren F1 enthusiast should own even considering the slight error that jkbon points out. The rest of the details are awesome and the quality of the build is superb.

Minichamps actually built this model in 5 colors (silver, red, blue, green, yellow) and they built 1677 of each color for a total of 8385 of them. They were originally $480 and I paid $375 for mine which had seen some display time outside it's box, but is still in excellent condition. I have seen them sell for as much as $750, but that was for a yellow one that was still sealed in the box.

I have some photos of mine that I can share, but they aren't hosted yet so I'll post some pictures I borrowed from an old Ebay auciton.

http://a5.cpimg.com/image/67/0B/20364135-c331-0190012C-.jpg

Pictures don't really do the model justice as it looks much more impressive in person. I'm happy with my blue one, but if given a chance I would also purchase a silver and a green.

FYI -

Recent eBay prices:

Red $392, $499
Yellow $570
Dark Blue $350
Dark Green $520
Silver none recently

I don't have one - yet - but have been watching. They're very nice models. Not the detail of the latest GMP and Exoto 1/10 and 1/12 scale Ford GT40 models, but still very nice.

Actually, it didn't take long to arrive at all. I got lucky and found mine with a "Buy it now..." price. I exchanged a few quick emails with the seller to verify condition and then made the purchase via PayPal. He was in New York and I'm near Los Angeles and I had the thing in less than a week.

One thing I would caution you on if you plan to buy one of these is to ask the seller to package the car very well. The seller I bought mine from had several of these in his collection and he told me that if you don't fill all the voids in the styrofoam tray which is inside the box, that things can get broken off during shipping. He used some simple napkins folded up and stuffed into the surrounds of the wheels and doors. He also put two rubberbands around the car where the doors and main engine cover are. As an extra measure of safety he added two small pieces of clear tape on the front hood and rear engine cover so they would stay closed during shipping. Then he put the Minichamps box in a much larger box for shipping and suspended it in the middle with lots of newspaper and packing materials. It arrived in perfect condition.

I might have good news and I might have bad news.....

On the bottom of the one I'm looking at it says "Paul's Model Art" in cursive. What does that mean? I thought minichamps was the only company that made 1:12 McLarens....

Peloton25

Paul's Model Art, Minichamps & UT were all interelated companies. There's only one 1:12th scale McLaren diecast in the world, so have no fears. ;)

I'm not familiar with this "Dark Grey" color you speak of. I have photos of all the others which were available, but have never seen this last one you mention. Any chance you have some pictures or can post some info confirming that?

Also, the MSRP on these was always fixed at $480, in some cases it was even higher at the time of release depending on what shops you went to. I recall them selling for between $600 & $750 early on when the demand was high. I don't think they would have released an extra color and lowered the price. That doesn't make much sense. I'm not calling you a liar, this is just very surprising info to me and if you could back it up with something, I'd really appreciate it.

= = = = =

I took some time and resized some photos that a poster on SC.net had put up a while back. This red one belongs to a friend named 'Supercarfreak' over there and I'm sure he wouldn't mind me sharing these great shots. I can't post them at full resolution (1024) so I will post smaller versions and you can copy the link and .orig.jpg to the end of it to see the big ones. I also have photos of my blue one that I can post later. They are all 2560x1936 so they desperately need to be resized before I can put them up here.

Here goes with the red ones:

Peloton,

great pics.
Dark Grey was the sixth and last color for the 1/12 Mclaren.
Nothing custom, it is a color directly from PMA/Minichamps.
Same as the 1/18 Mclaren F1 Dark Grey from UT Models.

Regards to the MSRP, I was told several times that it was $195.

I am gonna look for pics, a collector emailed me and had them all.

Well here's one source that confirms there were only the five colors:

http://www.maxpages.com/raremodelcars/Pauls_Model_Art

They do contradict my production number claim of 1667 each though, stating there were 2000 of each. I believe my number comes from ExoticCar Model Gallery when they used to carry these. Maybe the 2000 is accurate though.

2000 per color or 1667 depending on what figure you believe. I used to have all of my old Exoticar Model Gallery catalogs, but I threw them away recently. I could almost swear that their figure was the 1667 per color but the 2000 per color is seen in several other places and makes more sense. Now if you believe there were only 5 colors than that would be 10,000 in total. If there really was a sixth color, then I guess they made 12,000 but I can't believe I wouldn't have seen that somewhere else before.

To post images here, you must first have the image hosted somewhere on the web so that there is a URL acssociated with the image. If you have a website, or regularly use a photo album of some sorts to post images in your Ebay auctions, then you should be familiar with this process. If not, you can sign up for a free account at www.imagestation.com and upload your photos there. Then you need to right-click on each image and select 'Properties'. Then copy the URL to your clipboard.

This forum uses image tags to embed images into a post. The tags are easy to learn, but this site makes it even easier with a handy link in the posting window. It looks like this http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/wysiwyg/vB_InsertImage.gif and is found in the option bar directly above the area where you type your post. That button will open a small popup window and you can simply paste the URL you copied into it. It does the rest of the work and your image should appear in the post when you hit 'Preview Reply'. If it doesn't then you have done something wrong.

If you have any problems, you can always email any image directly to me and I will host it somewhere and post it myself. My email address is Peloton25@hotmail.com

The auction for the blue one that someone posted is about to end. The price is at $280 last I looked - quite fair for what you are getting if it stays that low. Sometimes these things have a way of skyrocketing in price in the last 30mins though.

There is also a green one available and the price sits at $200 right now. Here's the link:

Yesss, I finally got mine!!! It's so awesome. For those interested in buying one, heres the highs and lows:
highs
- fabric seat belts, and fabric lining in side storage compartment
- overall amazing detail on every feature, even the incredibly text on the stereo system and everything is legible, even the labels for the interior panels on each side of the driver are legible
- exhaust pipes and brake rotors are very shiny
- steering wheel turns farther than any other model I have, it almost goes totally upside down
- extremely high detail on the pedals
- even the gold on the inside of the engine and those things behind it (aren't they the catalytic converters?) is imitated very well
- the rarity and high price makes you feel big :smokin:

lows
- turn signals inverted
- for some reason, on mine the doors don't stay in place when opened, same with the engine cover. When trying to balance them open, they'll come violently crashing down
- the interior on mine is an ugly shade of green, I think this is because the exterior is also green.
- theres no plaque in the interior that would tell the #
- sometimes with rare items theres a serial number, but not with this one

I got a little curious and took out a magnifying glass and looked around the car for information on it (i'm such a dork  ). Couldn't find the chassis number!

Well, I've probably blabbed a bit too much. I hope my information can help out a future owner though

Peloton25
11-18-2003, 09:37 PM
Glad to hear you finally got yours!

As far as your lows -
The doors don't stay up on any of them that I'm aware of, they're simply too heavy. My main engine cover stays up, but the rear cover will not by itself.

I have the blue exterior and got the same ugly green interior. I don't know how many interior variations there are, but most of the others seem to have a flat gray interior.

I wish they had included the number plate as well - that would have been a nice touch. Also, numbering them as you mention would have been a good idea.

One more thing - get your magnifying glass out again and look at the rear 1/4 windows behind the doors. They actually have the F1 logo and the word 'Sekurit' printed on the glass. It's super tiny though, and easy to miss.

I noticed that but didn't know what it was called so I didn't mention it. Thats absolutely amazing, it seems like they took the real car and shrunk it. I wouldn't be surprised if I poked the gas pedal and the engine revved and the rear wheels started spinning

I agree - having one of the McLaren mockups would be kind of cool - especially one finished with a livery of the winning GTR. I think they are actually 1/10 or 1/8th scale. The only thing I wouldn't like about it is I'm sure they are solid with no moving parts and no interior. My guess is that they are made out of plastic, possibly formed in a mold if they planned to make a lot of them. I would be surprised if the wheels even rotate. It would still be an awesome centerpiece to someone's F1 collection.

Maybe someday one will show up on Ebay. I do believe that each owner was presented with one in the color of their own McLaren. Does anyone know for sure if that is true?

I think I just might be misquoting something so I'll look around for it and post when I find it. Maybe they weren't actually given the cars, but I do believe that McLaren cars would paint one of those smaller mockups in the customer's color of choice to help them with their decision. Peloton, I think that McLaren painted a 1:18 or 1:12 model in the color the buyer wanted, so he could check if he liked it. I think it`s in the Driving Ambition book. I`ll check later.

Yeah Sanson - Right you are - I knew I wasn't crazy! :grinyes:

From Pg 176 of "Driving Ambition" - the chapter that reprints the full AutoCar test, there is a sidebar relating to the fitment and customozation process of a buyer's F1 and part of it reads:

A 1/10th scale model in the colour you finally choose is part of the McLaren package. It arrives shortly after a firm order has been placed.

Maybe they only did that during the first year or two of production, but it certainly seems like I was on to something with my statement earlier.

I have the blue exterior and got the same ugly green interior...

Anyone here got a blue one without, (i.e. a diffferent colour), the green interior: i was holding out for a blue one, but now i'm starting to go off the idea...

Yes, I remember reading that too. But it didn't happen with every car/color.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I think I found the motherload of pics for that 1:12 F1 GT: http://fanmod.com/memo2/media/1/20031106-McF1.jpg

You didn't find those here (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=88315&page=6) by any chance, did you? :lol2:

It's all good though...

While I'm here, where did you get that shot of the LM with the doors up in the image in your sig? I'm not at home to browse my photo collection at the moment, but the shot doesn't appear to be familiar to me. Can you please share the original or explain where it came from? Thanks!!

Yes, I believe the photo was taken from ronkimballstock.com and I got the animation from a Diecast Cars site. Someone had posted it and I thought it was really neat. I believe this is the original pic, but the rims have been brightened: http://www.ronkimballstock.com/pr/~17892596~AUT_28_RK0015_04.jpg

peloton, when are you gonna add that very rare not-in-shops limited edition of the 1:18 03R that was handed over to vips to your collection...

talking about VIP's. I'm a VIP guest at this weekend's massive 'innercity' house party!!! dj tiesto will close the evening, every main playa will be there behind some big or small dj booth. :D:D:D:D

Yeah - your calculations would be correct. When I saw that I actually emailed the seller to find out if he knows why the bidding is so high. It seems outrageous since that car normally sells for $50-75 USD.

Maarten - I'm not certain which one you are referring to. Do you have a photograph? Which livery was it?

west livery, i heard it was limited to 200 pieces and they were given to VIP's on some event. Now they sell for outrageous prices i've heard. myth of fact?

If there is a 1/18th scale version of the WEST Competition/Dave Price Racing #03R, I have never seen it. I know that there was a version of that particular car in 1/43rd scale that is somewhat rare and was produced as a promotional piece. Maybe that's the car you are thinking of.

I haven't really started down the slippery slope of collecting the 1/43rds yet as I simply couldn't afford to even make a decent collection of them. I have the silver and green F1 road cars in 1/43rd and someday I may add #01R but I think that will be it.

"When I saw that I actually emailed the seller to find out if he knows why the bidding is so high. It seems outrageous since that car normally sells for $50-75 USD."

Also odd that it is listed as a private auction: there are unscrupulous persons on eBay that list items for sale in such a way, and get their mates, (or even themselves), to drive the price, (artificially), upwards.

It is also interesting to note that one of the people this seller sold to recently is a Japanese person who is notorious for going to extraordinary lengths to outbid all other bidders: if i were an unscrupulous seller and knew my customer(s), i would probably be inclined to take steps to ensure that they paid as much as possible for an item, (see the above hypothesis for a possible explanation)...

If you look back through the sellers feedback ratings, you'll see that a "similar" model was purchased by him/her from, (i think Taiwan), at a fraction of the price.

Those are plausable scenarios, but in that case the stupid bidder deserves to pay a ridiculous amount. Right now, this very same diecast is available in a different auction with a "Buy it Now" price of $60. There's no reason for anyone to be bidding this up so high. Incidentally, I haven't seen a reply to my inquiry yet.

Agreed on your first point, and frankly i'm not surprised you've not had a reply to your e-mail; perhaps this scenario, (or one similar), is plausable...

I love a good conspiracy, as long as i'm not a victim of it!

Well he replied - and seems almost as shocked as we are:

Hello,

I have no idea. The only thing I can think of and has been said is that all
my cars are immaculate and packaged really well.

The guy thats winning this auction has won another auction and he would
rather buy the cars in the UK rather than overseas too.

I'm not complaining though...obviously.

Thanks
Chris

Strange is not the word for it, suspicious i would say; it's now gone to £430.00. There's another one on there at the moment for exactly £400.00 less, in the UK.

If there was a bidding war on for this particular model, (and i don't care what the seller says, it would have to be solid gold, diamond encrusted and signed by Gordon Murray with an Armani trimmed interior to be worth that, not "immaculate and packaged really well"), wouldn't you pull out and save yourself £400?

Sorry, it stinks...
