I'm a newb here, welcome me!!!! j/k

Anyways, saw this post and thought I'd jump in. I currently drive a 91 2.2L Auto Cav. I bought it at 105k less than 3 years ago, but now it has 155k. The 2.2 is one sturdy engine, but I don't think mine will last. I think it also lacks real HP. I saw this 96 2.2L L4 for sale that I may be able to acquire. And then I want to partially mod that so it can be comparable to a decent 6 cyl. I'm sick of getting beat all the time and I need something that doesn't keep getting overtaken at traffic lights when some a--hole comes up on the right to pass you up. Unfortunately I don't think suping up my current Cav will do anything, as it has way too many problems to invest in fixing. So I'm looking into buying a newer Cavalier as a mini-project car. I would've loved to have found a Cav (Z24) with a 2.4 instead as I believe that is one hell of an engine there. But a 2.2 will have to do.

If anyone's interested, I'm also into Jetta III's, but only the GLX model. When I have decent money for one of those, that will be my real project car.

Anyways, if I get that 96, I will be hitting up these boards for suggestions on increasing it's HP reasonably.

how can you tell the difference between an ecotec and a regular engine?

studballs
02-19-2004, 09:08 AM
Ecotec's were offered in 2002 LS Sports only and standard on 2003 and 2004 Cavaliers and Sunfires...it also says ECOTEC on the top of the engine

Mine's a 90 2.2 (automatic tranny though :disappoin oh well), it woulda lasted longer, but the guy I got it from beat the heck out of it, so I got it (the engine I mean) rebuilt. It's got 25,000 mi on it since and hasn't given me a problem.
I love my "little blue" and it's gonna take a lot to get him away from me.

You know, people always laugh when I tell them this. But, if I had obscene amounts of money(you know, shits and grins kind of money).I would take my 98 cav,I drop in an LT1,5psd,and any other crazy power improving bolt-on that would fit in that tiny engine compartment.I'd get flowmasters, and the same style exhaust on the early 90's style mustangs, the kind you can barely see, they are kind of curved under like a half U shape. So that in essense,it would be an extreme sleeper.

Hey guys, I just bought an '03 5-speed Ecotec Coupe.

I think the sound of the car would throw out all possibilities of it being a sleeper fajita...

and why not go with the LS1 T56 6 speed?

fajita23200
03-02-2004, 12:02 PM
Yes, the sound would give it away.As for the LS1,it's an awesome engine. But,for some reason I've always liked the LT1.My friend had a 96 Z28,auto,he had something done, some kind of chip upgrade or reprogramming that made that car screaaaaam!!!

Pop the hood, the valve cover will say "2.2 Ecotec" and the intake manifold is on the front of the motor when you stand in front of the car and the exhaust goes out the back. It's back to front of a normal 2.2 engine.

studballs

unless you have a 2002 LS Sport or a 03 or 04 Cavalier you don't have the Ecotec.

'90 cavalier 2.2L with 180K, not currently running though, in process of replacing head gasket which seems to be a common problem with these engines.
Then will see how she runs, seeing how i just bought the car.

My first car I ever got was an '88 Cavalier Z24 convertible.
It had I think a 2.8 V6 engine with 3 spd automatic transmission. I miss that car alot. It was like the role model for cavs. My second car which I bought this February is an '02 Cavalier LS with one of those loveable 2.2 Ecotech engines.

I'd prefer Z24's any day.
