I got the U.S. Initial D dvd today. Got it at Best Buy for $14.99. They only had "Battle:01 AKINA's DOWNHILL SPECIALIST". This was the first time I actually got to view I.D., really great I was glued to it the whole time and I wanna see more. Its approx 150min long. It has "Classic version (Japanese Audio w/ Original Video) & Tricked Out version (English Audio w/ Enhanced video). I dont know the diffrence between Original video and Enhanced, because I was so anxious I went straight to watching it in English, I'll fuck w/ it some more tommarow and see everything on it. Has Animated menus and has Extras section w/ Deleted scenes and such. It had 3 Acts on it...Act.1: The Ultimate Tofu Store Drift...Act.2: Revenge! The Rumbling Turbo...Act.3: The Downhill Specialist Appears. I was so bummed, Act 3 end's right before Tak shows up w/ his Ae86 to whip some Red Sun Rx7 ass. I thought the english dubbed would be stupid, but I thought it was cool, seemed just like any other Japanese Anime Ive seen clips of. I cant wait, I wanna see more more more more. When are the rest of the Tricked out dvds coming out. If they do release the whole ID set how many would that be? Info please. I want everything, like is their some boxset they will release or somthing, but must be like this english dubbed.....Also weird was I went to SunCoast Films and they said this Battle 01 wasnt coming out til Tuesday, but found it at best buy. Cool stuff

well I D by Tokyo Pop is just plain gay, sorry to say but Tokyo Pop butchers everything especially when it's with something as sacred and great as Initial D. I don't care how cool you thought it was, if you saw the original one from Japan you'd be amazed how much better it was. My brother saw the first commercial for Initial D by Tokyo Pop and he said it was f**kin terrible I'm not sayin you shouldn't see I D, I just don't want drifting and things like Initial D to become a fad or a trend and have everyone knowing about it.

I under you completely, I know this really isnt the same topic as Drifting and such, but Im into Indie music, and I hate it when they get signed to a major label and blow up on Music TV and such. Believe me I love drifting and the last thing I wanna see is Paul Walker and friends drifting on the big screen and have all the 240's and all decent RWD drift cars increase 75% in price. Ive known of ID for awhile just really didnt have much intrest into watching them cause of the simple fact I dont know any such form of Japanese. I looked at the release date and such for Tokyopops dvd's and I just cant wait that long. When I get home Im going to watch it in Classic version and put on English Captions and see how much I enjoy the original. If I adapt to it, I will definetly buy the whole complete original boxset for ID. Some things Ive noticed also are Name changes, they did ad in some kinda urban hiphop. Any questions about it you have I can tell you if you ask me.

Yeah! Too bad the only thing it does it return the music to normal, and the car noises, and the subs. Great. Now what about the chunk of the story missing out because they didnt want the little kids who watch the american DVD to know that his girlfriend is a whore

ohh...forgot about that part...they didnt show the part where he punched that one guy. in my opinion the US version is on the low side of good. The american sounds are so weird! Like itsuki ( iggy for you newbs) sounds like micealangelo from ninja turtles. Cant even here the BOV's. only in some parts. the music in my opinion sucks!!

Ahem.... Grow up.

As a fairly distinguished member of the anime community (the Godfather of serious Mihoshi fanfiction, according to many reviewers) and an anime fan since the dark days of US Manga Corp and the Pioneer "Samurai X" dub of Rurouni Kenshin, I've found no problem with legal DVD's that contain a fairly unmolested original Japanese version and cost 5-7 dollars U.S less than DVD's from comparable companies. Yes, the dub is atrocious to those who've seen the sub. Takehito Koyasu is nigh irreplaceable as the voice of Ryousuke Takahashi (Brian Drummond or Crispin Freeman are two acceptable standins). However, Tpop is not a "butcher". In fact, they've done more in the past two years to release controversial and niche manga titles than the biggies like Viz and Dark Horse have done in ten. Yaoi, Shonen-Ai, Sports, Shojo Drama, Fashion, and even the encouragement of new American artists to step to the forefront where the domestics (Marvel and DC) have faltered.

WhiteBlur, Do a bit of research before slinging insults at a shoestring budget company that gambled where no other company would. Pioneer, ADV, Bandai, FUNimation, Animeigo, Viz, Manga Entertainment, and CPM all passed over Initial D because they didn't want to risk the high license cost for a series in a niche that, excepting Speed Racer, had never been investigated. Next time you pick up a copy of a repititive harem series like Love Hina, or another trite "collect all these items to defeat the evil power" show like DBZ, understand you're holding a big company's safe bet versus a little company's wild risk.

Here endeth the lesson.

Tokyopop may not have butchered the other anime, but this forum is all about the Initial D, and they DID butcher Initial D..thanks the for info, but they really did mess up on this one. I do mind the voice overs, i didn't mind the renaming that much because it already happened on the Arcade ver., but even thinking about turning him into a pizza delivery boy is crossing the line. When you replace the rotary r0wr! with a universal exhaust noise...its over. Tokyopop needs to stop with teh bs.

I bought the Tokyo Pop Initial D DVD yesterday. It was cool but IM pissed i could only get Vol. 1 the downhill specialist. Anyone happen to know when the other two volumes will be there? I havent seen the japanese version uncut, anyone on kazaa have all of them, maybe with subtitles? I'd just like to know what I"m missing. So far it looks very cool; My first thoughts of the yellow FD: What, is that guy plannin to fly or something? With a wing that size it should have no problem doing so.

Alright guys, how many of you have actually got the DVD and watched it? Yes, I agree with you, the long time Initial D fans, TokyoPop did butcher Initial D in their English Version, but as someone has said, there is a Classic version which is just like the original. It does show Takumi knock the shit out of that other guy, and the Mogi is a whore, as someone else put it.

Now see where the big difference is, for all of us long time Initial D fans, watching the english version is just unacceptable because of the voice overs. We are so used to hearing the original voices, our brain just can't accept new ones, therefore is just seems as if the lips are moving and nothing is coming out. I first experienced this strange affect when I watched Trigun for the first time on Cartoon Network. I had watched all but 3 episodes of it on the computer, meaning it was the original voices, and could not accept the new ones.

But I will admit, TP did take a different turn on ID than their other animes. With their other animes, they left most the of words the same, except maybe take out a few words, but they didn't go as far as trying to throw slang in there. I have a fear that they are trying to make this the new fad, which will bring alot of new people trying to enter the scene, much like Fast & the Furious did. But after time, it will die off. Just keep what your doing and don't pay attention to the people who are just trying to leech onto what has been here for a long time.
