help....it won't start....again

I am a poor college student and I'm scared of mechanics so any advice/help would be appreciated.

I have a '95 neon that I've had LOTS of problems with. Right now it won't start at all. Tonight I tried to start it and it turned over very slowly but didn't start. I tried again and it barely turned over at all. The third time, nada. Not even a sound. I tried to jump it but that didn't help at all.

Things I should mention:

The battery is only 6 months old. I have been through 2 72 month batteries in 2 years.

The odometor/speedometer/temp (all dash gages) quit working two years ago and only work rarely. Once in a while, the speedometer will come on and flip up and down really fast while I'm driving.

For the last month or so, I've noticed that when I run a bunch of errands and have to drive, turn off the car, and start it again it gets harder and harder to start each time. Once in a while it would turn over really slowly, but still start.

I know absolutely nothing about cars, and I'm pretty poor at the moment, so any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Has the car been maintained? Lack of care will cause alot of problems to happen, not to mention the fact just being a Neon is a source of problems in itself :lol:

Things I would check:

- spark plugs & wires
- all connections to battery..make sure they are secure and that there is no corrosion on them
- air filter...if it is clogged or dirty and air cannot flow to the motor, that can contribute to problems.
- throttle body...make sure the throttle plate is not stuck shut. Without any air going to the motor it won;t start or will have diffficulty starting
- have the alternator tested...if it's bad enough it can drain your battery
- fuel filter or fuel injectors could be clogged...have you had a fuel injector service at all?
- crankshaft or camshaft position sensor(s) could be dead'


These are just a few things I could think of off the top of my head at this ungodly time of night :D

I am in the same place as you, except for the inabilty to start. I have a 95 neon and the speedometer hasn't been working for about 4 or 5 years now. It's been worked on but there seems to be no hope...

ummm probably wouldn't be air filter but those others are good, I would definetly get the battery checked along with the alternator, fuel filter and injectors, and does it seem to do this at certain times? (When you start it in the morning, when its already warmed up what) Also when you try to start it and it doesn't pump the gas a little when its cranking see if that works. For the speedo and other gauges you would have to tear apart the dash to fix that probably or new speedo cable. BTW it's illegal to drive without a speedo just 2 let ya know.

It might be your alternator.... if your car never turns on. or your ECU... COmputer CHiip in your car is missed up

definantly sound like the alternator, it causes the batter not to charge, it also could be the starter
