some of you that have been around these parts for a while may remember the build up of this kit.

Finally after having the wheels sticking out of the arches glaring at me for so long I have finally decided to add some custom flared guards front and rear to add some form of realism to the kit.

parts were first sketched on paper then cut out and place on the shell to sort out how the styrene should be cut. This was then transfered onto the styrene and cut out. the sections will then be overlayed to form the basic shape for the flares before the addition and forming of the putty.

work is underway on the rear guards but as yet I am still undecided onto the correct look for the front guards.

Looks good! Can't tell what thickness plastic your using, but u could use .005 and stick 2-3 layers on eack arch and they will conform to the curves very easily.

Will you also taper the edges into the bodywork and maybe add some rivets?

I can not think of a better way of doing it, Iv built a plane wing the same way, just layers of plastic sheet, and some putty.

But remember you can sand and file the plastic to form a curve as well, to minimise your putty useage.

And is it possible to get the basic shape of the guard on the car, useing the clips as you have, then take it off for final shaping, this way you can build both sides at once, and compare them side by side to make sure they are the same.


The front flare is going to be ticky though, if you make it a big one in the same style as the back then you have to work on the bumber as well as in coperating that panel crease.

haven't decised yet but I know for a fact that it will NOT be staying gunmetal grey

How about yellow, I remeber a pic in one of my magazines that had a yellow R32 GTR with the words "Legendary Snail" as a windsheild banner........ or make it black with some Nismo stickers would be cool as well!

Great idea Taz. Can I suggest for the front just extend the guards slightly as if the car had a widebody kit on it. It looks like you did this with the rear instead of flaring the guards which is what I thought you were going to do. I have some pictures af an R34 with a Blitz widebody kit. Hope this helps.

Just saw the 350z in your sig pic, Taz, what about the bumber ends and guards off that?
(would mean rebuilding the front of the z, but hey that could be your next project! :D )

decided on a simple 'lip' around the front section of the front wheel arches. Opinions welcome. Just need to get the lines smooth and then wack a coat of primer on to see what it looks like.

This is looking good. The yellow I think will look really good. Keep us posted.

Given it a coat of primer so I can see the rough spots easier once thats dry I will give it another light sanding and try to get it looking nice and smooth (it may take awhile)

looking good. Only thing I can suggest is playing with the shape of the front guards some more, taking the square angle off of the top of where it flares out so that it blends in some more....

well this is starting to annoy me now. I just cant seem to get it smooth, primered it and it looked smooth so I painted it and now all the imperfections are showing through :(.

you will be pleased to know that I haven't given up on this rebuild. I am currently patching up the putty and trying to get it to a smooth looking finish. It will no longer remain yellow. cant find a decent yellow

the color will now be a prismatic color Dark blue to UV loos good and should suit the lines of the kit.

added a couple of gold lines to it to brake up the colour a bit before I added the prismatic color. Was an experiment but I kinda like how it turned out so will stick with it. needs another coat or 2 of prismatic and then a few coats of clear and it should look even better than the 350Z

wow tazdev Im really likin the widebody treatment. I agree with ^^ jgm, it was lookin rough at first but you pulled it together nicely. waiting for more pics of the finished product.

still a few "issues" to sort out as I had to custom fit the front windscreen due to my home made A-pillars. Snapped the windscreen in 1/2 accidentally so am now trying other ways of fixing this.

its becoming a major mission and cant wait to get it done.

looking good, I need to come more often in here and get some inspiration to get back into my models

clear coat is drying as we speak thens its a few minor things to do before complete pics get posted. Cant wait to get this one finished, its been a LONG project
