Next Project.....Nissan 350 Zprimera man 08-11-2003, 08:58 PM New model underway a few days ago. Most here have built one so i look forward to hearing your views on the build. Body was primed a couple of days and will get a final coat of Mica Blue TS-50 in a few days time. Kit will be build almost stock from the box as i like the style and shape of this car and doesnt need any real mods to improve it IMO. The underneath is all painted and finished. This is about 4 days work to get it done. Those of you who haven't build this kit wont know the whole underneath comes molded as One frickin piece and needs plenty of time to get it looking just right. Lots of small brush painting and masking to get it finished. The only part added in the photo is the muffler. Finished today after giving it a black wash. http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/579794DSCF1988.JPG http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/669241DSCF1996.JPG Toyotagt1 08-11-2003, 09:01 PM Great the first blue 350 Z !!!!!! I agree. Your paint jobs are always fantastic. Quick question, approx. how much of the Tamiya paint can do you use when putting down 5 coats? Whole can? Half can? This would help me gauge how much to put down on my cars in the attempt to replicate a P-man caliber paint job. thizishkenny 08-13-2003, 01:18 PM nice paint job!!! Hiroboy 08-13-2003, 01:43 PM http://www.bavf.org/images/stock/john_fales.jpg Damn that shine, where's my dark glasses.........That's better mike united 08-13-2003, 02:09 PM P-man is using at least two cans on each car. Iv'e started buying two cans for each car myself now as one is just not not enough, especially if your doing the undercarriage the same color. Later, Mike. malsheem 08-13-2003, 03:05 PM Originally posted by mike united P-man is using at least two cans on each car. Iv'e started buying two cans for each car myself now as one is just not not enough, especially if your doing the undercarriage the same color. Later, Mike. Two cans is a lot of paint. I normally use up one whole can for car plus undercarriage. I guess my last few "wet" layers should be a little wetter. That would probably help bring out that mirror like shine that I'm searching for. Well, off to the hobby shop to buy more paint. Thanks for the tip. Midnight Racer 08-13-2003, 03:19 PM Stunning paint as usual.:bigthumb: :bigthumb: Camber 08-13-2003, 03:21 PM Originally posted by mike united P-man is using at least two cans on each car. Correct me if im wrong but I remember him saying he can paint 3 cars a can. mike united 08-13-2003, 03:46 PM Hmmmmmmmm.......cant fathom out how you can get a thorough deep paint job with just one can, from my own personal experience up to now i can only get two, three pushing it decent layers out of one can. On the other hand though, one can is enough if your just painting to cover and then clear coating. Later, Mike. primera man 08-13-2003, 07:11 PM Most times i will get about 3 cars painted to one can of Tamiya spray. The 350Z was started with a brand new can and i'd have at least half of the can left. This was for the 5 coats on the body, about 3-4 coats on the chassis and the rear wing/mirrors all painted. Remember the first two coats are VERY VERY LIGHT MIST COATS which use very little paint, then followed by the heavy ones pettercardoso 08-13-2003, 08:27 PM 3 cars: 1 Tamiya can ?!! that's a great ratio! :D How much time do you wait between coats? Could you explain how you spay your wet coats? I'm kinda slow..haven't quite understood the "wet coat" concept :D thizishkenny 08-13-2003, 08:31 PM so when u paint your first 2 coats how light is it? and when u paint the heavy coat how heavy? Because mine could never get like that for some reason. Could you show us pictures of how the coats look like? ZoomZoomMX-5 08-13-2003, 08:35 PM Originally posted by primera man Most times i will get about 3 cars painted to one can of Tamiya spray. Sounds about right. I paint about 2 cars and have some paint left over using a single Tamiya paint can. Three models would be stretching it, and I would make sure I've got another can ready. I go through flat and semigloss black more often, more parts to paint. EMAXX 08-13-2003, 08:58 PM Dang P-man, enlighten us. We know that you made a FAQ and everything, but still, its just so amazing. :bigthumb: GTI1800 08-13-2003, 09:34 PM Hi PRIMERA MAN, always a pleasure to see your paint job.... You were right for the can....... very light mist coat...is the best way... Nice again..... Laurent primera man 08-13-2003, 10:10 PM It all in here ....read carefully !! I guess it takes practice to get right. 3-4 Coats of finish coat about 5-10 minutes apart...thats it...nice a simple.(keep the can warm) The first coat is a very light mist coat...the paint should only just be landing on the car. Spray at a distance of 8-10 inches moving quite quickly with the can as you spray. YOU SHOULD STILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE PRIMER AMOST AFTER THIS COAT Do the same for the second coat. The third coat you can spray a bit more heavy so it covers the model. This is done by slowing the speed that you move the spray can as you paint. The last coat is the one you want to get perfect. Spray at a new distance of 4-6 inches. You should be trying to get a mirror like smoothness to the final coat. If you are to far away it will not get enough paint and you can get a orange peel look. Too close and the paint will go on to thick and will run and may cause bubbles to appear. You may need to repeat the last step to get a better finish and coverage. Dont rush...take your time. If the paint is not covering to well in the first couple of light coats DONT try and add more paint straight away as this will cause runs in the paint. Allow it to dry and then add a couple of extra light coats to help cover. circuitR 08-14-2003, 01:57 AM One day, just one day I will get good paint jobs. P-man, you the spray can man! Love your work. mike united 08-14-2003, 03:25 AM Well F..k me.....i never !!! Half a can left after spraying a car, im sitting here shaking my head in disbeleif beacause im just totally gobsmacked. This makes me want to jack it all in..........but im obviously not going to. Well.........back to the drawing board, gonna do as P-man has written here and see how it goes, gonna start first by trying to get a car finished with no more than one can. By the way Warren, i hate you !?!..........Your so good at painting........ Later, Mike. Bangai-o 08-14-2003, 05:09 AM Do you clear coat then P-Man? If I do that many coat I walways sand through to the primer trying to get a perfectly smooth finish :( primera man 08-14-2003, 05:47 AM Originally posted by Bangai-o Do you clear coat then P-Man? But I am really confused here and could you answer a couple of questions. 1. I was under the impression that with Mica and Metallic colours you shouldnt polish the base colour because the metal flakes will leave swirl marks and scrapes in the paint. But you said you are going to polish and wax in a few days? 2. When you are doing a race car do you polish, decal and then wax? And are you just using the wax to protect the decals? Also could you do us all a huge favour on your next model would you take a pic of each stage of the base colour so we can all see exactly how much is going onto the model at each stage. Thank you. Ciaran Hiroboy 08-14-2003, 07:25 AM Originally posted by primera man No...i never clear coat my models I also never clear coat a model if using Tamiya TS Paints only if airbrushing non tamiya paints thizishkenny 08-14-2003, 10:21 AM thanks for that little tutorial!!!! I will try to get that kind of paint finish on my next model. malsheem 08-14-2003, 11:39 AM I think all it takes is lots of practice. I'm seeing gradually better results each time I paint using the tips from the FAQ. And infinitely better than the stuff from before reading the FAQ. Eventually (hopefully), I'll achieve that super smooth paint job. Thanks for all the tips. primera man 08-17-2003, 06:58 AM Pman, 1. I was under the impression that with Mica and Metallic colours you shouldnt polish the base colour because the metal flakes will leave swirl marks and scrapes in the paint. Ciaran 1. Ive always polished Mica paints and had no problem with swirl marks etc. 2. I use the compound first to get a good polish on the body then apply the decals. Leave for 1-2 days to dry then give the whole body a good waxing. This will help get rid of any water marks and give the car a final polish. The next car i do i'll post some pics as i paint it. EMAXX 08-17-2003, 11:12 AM I'll be looking for the pics p-man. mike united 08-19-2003, 08:32 PM Hey Warren !
