Hi I am 16 year old male and I have my eye set on a 1989 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II. I was pondering the insurance cost? Would it be insanely bad? Like up there with mustangs or would it be "reasonable" not cheap, just "reasonable"?

I would guess probably well inexess of $200 a month. I have a friend his son has a turbo 89 supra and he's paying $238/mo for liability. His son has no tickets either.

You shouldn't own the car even if you can afford it.

Wait a minute.. do you have years of experience racing shifter karts before you got your license?

If not, then take your money and buy a Civic before you go wreck a S5 TurboII and possibly kill or hurt yourself or someone else.

Seriously, you don't need that car for your first car. Grow up a little, learn to drive and buy it when you're 21 years old.

I don't mean to be a dick, but seriously, don't buy it.

Wow Barwick you dont mean to be a dick but you are. Maybe only people with years of shifter kart experience should be the only ones owning RX 7s. The guy asked for what you all thought his insurance might be. Instead he gets some Fed up lecture about not being old enough to own a good car. And even if he did fuck up his turboII is that your problem? no i didnt think so. next time just answer the god damn question

parts are cheap, you just need to know where to get them

I would also reccomend that you wait,... maybe buy a series 5 (89-91) N/A RX-7 for now... still great cars, just minus about 40 hp.

... not because you are an inexperienced driver, but because my 88 Turbo II still costs me about 550/half, for a 20 yo female.

depending on your company, and your area i would estimate you rates to be right around 1K/half for the turbo, and 2/3 that for the N/A

BTW, you can make the n/a just as fast as the Turbo II w/o the insurance company knowing, and also, w/o that nasty turbo lag.

I'm 17 and i've got a blue 89' rx7 and the insurance is pretty steep but i think that it is well worth it so don't listen to those pricks who say you need to get a civic , WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT GUY KNOW! i've had mine for almost 2 years and i haven't wrecked it and i never drove a go cart thing or whatever the hell that was. so i think you should do it

I'm 17 and I have a 91 non-turbo and I pay 87 bucks a month, but a turbo is like 180 a month for me so yea insurance sucks, and I agree that it is not a good car to start with, but I don't say get a civic, I say if you like the TII's then buy a non-turbo and learn all about it, learn how the car drives and handles and gain atleast a years worth of experience before buying something like a TII

87? thats good!
im 19, i pay 103...also n/a
and n/a`s are just as fun to drive. everyone thinks they suck so much...non-rx people mostly. but an n/a would be a good start, still cheaper and far far less fruity than going with a civic. and i thought i heard mustang mentioned. dont even think about going there.

< worlds biggest mustang hater....dont even know y

damn.. all you youngsters owning RX7s. Make sure you DONT get any tickets. Each point can multiple your insurance rates because you drive a sports car.

BTW, 22 and been driving rotaries for 7 years. Best advice to start with an N/A RX7 and learn about them because the TII can be a world of suffering (boost, vacuum leaks, smog, detonation, etc). N/A insurance is also cheaper.

you people make it seem like the FC goes like 100mph and has no traction at a quarter throttle....get the car and enjoy it...dont mod it out "mad jdm tyte" or anything keep it stock for awhile and just know your limits...save till your 18 then just mod the bejeezus out of it :licka:

Soyo
09-22-2004, 03:26 PM
it does go 100mph, non-turbos go 138 to be exact, and yes, I've tested it :)

and traction can be really bad in even moderate weather or on some surfaces. I used to peel out leaving work everyday when I worked at sonic just because it was slick and it was hard to not spin the tires at all... plus turning corners can be crazy in the rain and such, so we have our reasons

I've gotta say I'm a little disapointed here any rx7 would be a good car for a begining driver to have just because they're so forgiving. MY first car was a 77 z28 camaro at the age of 15 well built more car then i needed , 2nd boat was a 89 mercury cougar at the age of 17 xr7 supercharged edition and at 18 my t2s insurance was much cheaper then both of my previous cars and my gxl is running around 40 a month at 20. Im planing on build my old t2 body for my 15 year old brother to drive when he gets his on the road just becuase I know how safe and forgiveing the car is. What the insurince company looks at most in a car is displacement and at 1.3 liters your gonna get alot lower rate then a 3.8 mustang even though a stock n/a would eat the mustang alive.

My two scents:

The first car I ever owned was a 1991 Mitsubishi GST, and the insurance was wretchid to say the least. Also, if this is your first time driving a stick, i dont suggest a turbo to start, I suggest learn on something NA, not a civic, cause thats not a real car. But dont be shamefull of an NA, if you learn to drive it, and can beat turbos with it... it's a very good feeling. For insurance purposes, stear clear of a turbo.

i dont care if a 16 year old kid kills himself by driving stupid. it just means one more car to pick through at the junkyard

First 3 cars I learn to drive a manual

1.) first gen MX-6 GT (turbo)
2.) 1988 RX-7 TII (turbo)
3.) first gen Probe GT (turbo)

There isn't anything wrong with learning to drive a manual with a turbo charged car.

I'm 17 and owned a 91 RX-7 FC, and im paying about $101 a month, fun car to drive. My RX-7 is a non Turbo. for a frist car i perfer not to get a Turbo because it can cause alot of problem. But later on u can always swap it out  Since Im still in school and i dont hav time to fix up my car. Fun car to drive.

LOL im 21, i repair and build rotary race cars for a living. My DD has well over 400whp and i live in one of the raniest cities out there.
Insurance for a 16 year old with a 205hp sports car will be VERY high.

why you would let a 16 year old kid drive a TII 7 is beyond me .... get that kid a cavalier or something. you don't know what the hell you're doing when you're that age.

get a turbo II if you can Brody, there is nothing better then boost, well ok there are a few things, but it is well worth it to have a turbo.

FDTT that turbo II you have is very nice. I miss mine all the time. It's one of many cars that I wish I had kept. :banghead:

That's what I did :p . I've owned my 91' N/A RX-7 for almost a year now with no problems (knock on wood). I started out with small things like mazdaspeed interior goodies (shift knob, steering wheel) and Mazda Aluminum racing pedals from japan. Then as time went on I starting doing more pricey things (Recaro seats, sound system, paint). When I first wanted one, I wanted the turbo, but my dad told me that I don't need it, it has enough power(for me atleast :icon16: ). All in all, I love my 7, and I wouldn't trade it for anything

I don't understand these insurance questions... How about you call an insurance company and see what it costs! Call geico or something! Give them your info and just tell them you want liability.

See I think you both are right. Book Knowledge and street knowledge are 2 differnt things. Someone could be book smart, but street stupid. Know what I mean? and Vice-Versa.

Anyway's, insurance will be what it will be. Doesn't matter what you are driving. Over time your insurance will go down, so long as you don't get in any accidents or anything like that.

for insurance priceas look it up online or call some local insurance people

give them the information adn they will give you a quote the ones online take like 5 minutes and will give you a rough Idea about the price

if you can afford it some places even give you a slight discount for paying for 6months or a year at a time

my first car at 16yrs old was a 240sx SR20DET, that I built with money I saved up from working

ok, insurance on 88 rx7 (no turbo) liability and full coverage on my 98 camaro for me and my 16 yr old with geico $166 a month, they will give u a free quote online

I don't think it matters, at 16 insurance is insurance, just like taxes, they will rape you either way.
