Building your own turbo kit?

I was wondering what a turbo kit consits of exactly, and how hard it would be to put one together. Also what things could I "make" myself (e.g. manifold)?

I have a frankenstein kit. I bought most of my parst through eBay. I'm installing it when I finish the little things (battery relocation, FMU install)

Including:

T3 Turbo
Header
Downpipe
Wastegate
BOV
Intercooler and tubing
Oil lines
Vac lines
Gaskets
Flanges
FMU
Missing Link
Gauges
Not necessary, but Boost controller and turbo timer help

Might not be cheap...mine is costing between 1500 and 2000. I have a 5th gen Accord as well.

What exactly does the wastegate do?

It makes sure you don't overboost. It releases excess exhaust so it won't affect the turbo. It can be either internal (on the turbo) or external (on the header). Externals are more efficient usually.

What does the blow off valve do then?

When you close the throttle, the excess air is blocked off from the intake, and it's coming back toward the turbo...this can be damaging (unless you have ball-bearing turbos). The blow off valve makes sure this excess air leaves before hitting the turbo.

Thanks man, sorry for the newb question

Ah, don't worry. I didn't know much about turbos before...then I did a little research, and am still learning as I go along. Pretty damn interesting stuff.

Ya they are very interesting. How much time should a turbo on a b16 running 8 psi take off my 1/4 mile time, any idea?

I have no clue on estimating times...I'd imagine it'd shave a couple seconds...but it depends on other factors. Just one of those things you'll have to test the real way. I'm sure it is more fun than estimating anyway.

8 PSI should give you close to 50% more horse power though.

Turbo kits are fairly easy to put together. All your really need is a turbo, manifold, downpipe and intake for the turbo. You won't beable to run high boost on a setup like this, but it's the basic turbo setup. Me personally, I have a precision T4 60-1, inline pro manifold, tial and greddy type s bov, tial 40mm wastegate, inline pro intercooler, custom charge pipes, 3" down pipe. There are other little things to get such as a boost controller(manual or electronic) and a boost guage to make sure you're not overboosting. You will also need to look into some sort of fuel system.

civicgsr_T4_60-1: How much could you gain with a setup like that?

for the part you can make your self:

exhaust manifold
Downpipe
I/C piping
I/C
exhaust piping

hmmm i think that's must of them

Just as much as with a purchased kit. For the price of buying a kit (that isn't even as good as what I put together) I got my entire turbo kit AND my hondata + injectors.

Wrong, i'd like to see you buy a kit like greddy, rev hard, drag and make as much power as me.

I've made over 500whp and 360ft lbs on medium boost. Stock head. Hoping for 600whp on high boost shortly. I'd like to see you do that with any of those pre done kits.

Did I ever say you can make more power buy buying an off the shelf kit than piecing together something of your own? For people that know what they're doing, yes, you can save a bunch of money by putting together your own kit, but for someone who just wants to bolt something onto their daily driver and has never installed a turbo kit before a pre-made kit is better.

And yeah, you made 500 WHP on medium boost, but you still have a laggy 60-1 :iceslolan SC61 all the way :bigthumb:

no, i just saw where you said you could make as much power. Up to a certain point you could make as much power, but it doesn't matter. For your average person a simple bolt on kit will do the job. It's not as laggy as you think:wink: I also don't have the newer SC61, i have the previous version which spools slower.
