Nut on top of strut, is it necessary?90gs 07-23-2003, 06:09 PM i was finally able to lower my car today, got the damn nut off of the top of the strut. during the process of taking the top nut off of the strut some of the threads on the rod in the strut got mashed. now i cant get the nut back on it, but theres still the other 2 that hold the strut to the chasis. my question is, is that top nut of the 3 absolutely necessary to drive? i drove the car around the block just to test it out and it seems fine but i dont want to do any extended trips until i know whether its safe or i get it fixed... 94civic 07-23-2003, 07:53 PM that third nut is what holds the spring and strut together. that third nut threads onto the top of the strut to hold the strut mount down onto the springs. i think you need it eckoman_pdx 07-24-2003, 06:35 AM In one word, Yes. I am pretty sure you need that nut. BullShifter 07-24-2003, 02:32 PM Yes you need it!!!! It wouldnt be there if you didnt! Get yourself some new shocks or tap it. What were you using Vice grips & pliers? 90gs 07-24-2003, 04:06 PM ride was bouncier without it... i got a friend to rethread it then took it to midas and they impact gunned the nut onto it (KYB GR2's dont have hex key hole at the top so you use an open ended wrench to hold the top since its a rectangle but when you first put the nut on it covers the top of it and will just spin the rod if you try to wrench it on.... IMPACT GUN!!) vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
