dont quite have the money to get a 240 yet, but im trying to be smart and look into s**t before buying it.

so here are the questions....i did read the faq, and some posts, and im sure the question has been answered, but in my head, im kinda confused

ok, in a few months i probably will have about 6k for a car and parts
to me, i like the 95+ gen style (that is s14 right)

well basically i looked at a few of the links for places to get engines, and ive reached some difficulties

basically it looks like a sr20det (s13) red top is gonna be about 2500, a black top between 2500 and 3000, and then an s14 up in the mid 3000 range

anyway, my question is basically whats the best choice, considering i have 6000ttl and want a 95sx

i think i understood that the redtops are a little cheaper just b/c they are older...? and that they both offer the same hp?

also is the s14 really worth the extra cash just for a 15-20hp gain

and on anther subject (kinda) i believe heavythrottle.com was saying u can still get around 220-250rwhp with an s13 if the turbo is right....do u need any extra (major) parts in order to maximize your boost, safely?

thanks for any input

I WOULD GO WITH THE S13 RED TOP AND TAKE IT TO WWW.RARETRICK.COM AND WWW.PROJECTSILVIA.COM!:bigthumb:

I've read plenty about the possible illegality of importing whole cars, but this is the first I've heard about the SR20DET being illegal. Aside from the emmissions, which can be fixed (right?), what's illegal about swapping one motor for another? We rednecks have been doing it for years with the Chevy 350 and the Ford 302 : ).

Unless you live in New Zealand, where the SR20DET comes as stock

it was recently published in toronto star that after the fast and furios 2 came out, they had an article with the skyline pointing out the various terms under which you can have certain parts. NOS is legal if u have the license to carry explosive chemicals, and how low is too low?? well if the very bottom of your skirt or car body is HIGHER than the lowest lip on your rims, then your safe.

as for engine swaps, as long as you call your ministry of transportation and have it e-tested and certified, then you can call your insurance company and tell them you have a swapped engine. then and only then is it legal.

EXACTLYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!.. ... as long as it's legal emissions wise ... it's legal.. < ---- PERIOD.. .. i'm planing on getting an sr20det next year... heavythrottle said you just have to do a tune up and it'll pass... just like every other car... remember some redtops r like a decade old... just collecting dust

i trust heavy throttle ALOT....but, they are wrong about the emissions. at least in missouri (where i'm from). i did a tune up, leaned the motor out, and ran some rubbing alchohol in the fuel mixture(runs really clean) and i still failed. i ended up getting a waiver. but, i'm also running a full 3in. exhaust with a high flow cat. in the middle. i've heard of people passing, but with very little to no mods done.

In regards to the S14 being more money, its usually more money because it has lower miles, you get more HP, and an improved turbo....also, you get VVT, which some people will say is worthless if your doing major mods (ie swapping cams)....i am glad i went with the s14 because it came with 23,000 miles on it....and a turbo capable of pushing 270hp. but, the s13 is still an awesome motor. and yeah, you can get 220-250hp out of the s13 with the stock turbo, just dial the boost up to about 12 or 13 psi.

isn't the s13 stock boost 7psi and the s14 stock boost 14 psi... ... the high port head on the s13 makes it an ideal POWER house of a 2.0L... vvt i think was just 2 combat the low port head in which the engine can't take as much air flow... is this right? i'm not really sure... but ... yea all the engines should have roughly the same amount of mileage ... that's y there's soo many in america... cuz after a certian mileage their considerd scrap... so the s13's r just older... in age... i'm getting an s13 i wanted an s14... but with the extra 2g's i'm gonna save i'll be able to make it race worthy

ImportNut1212

stock boost on an s14 is 7psi.....the turbo maxes out at around 15psi.

and yeah, your pretty right on the reason why they did vvt.....the difference (between low and high) isnt really that big of a deal unless your makin huge numbers....i think.

and not all the engines have about the same mileage. most s13's have about 60,000 kilo. on them, s14's usually are around 25-50k kilo. (depending on if its zenki or kouki) and the s15's ive seen as low as 10k kilo. my s14 had around 30,000 kilo.

oh yea... that's tru tho... prob from accidents n shit... i dunno n e one givin up their car to a scrap yard at like 30k

ImportNut1212

thats very true abou the accidents.....but then again, crazy japanese people thnk that a car is past its prime once it hits like 40k. but i suppose 40k on an island thats really small (comparatively to the USA) is quite a few miles?

Th*GgEd_OuTtTt
07-12-2003, 03:54 PM
even more tru... ... like i guess there's as much stores in 1 sq km in japan as there is in 10 sq km's in the us/canada

yeah, i've heard that too..

thanks a ton for all the great info

i live in North Carolina, anyone know about emissions there?
or anyone know of any techniques you can do to the block etc. to make it pass for sure, my neighbor owns an engine shop and can do anything concerning blocks, i just need to tell him what to do...although he might already know....but if u have any ideas

will the s14's be harder to make pass emisiions than the s13s?

thats it for now i think

thanks for everything so far!!

no no no, u still dont seem to understand. You have to inform the ministry of transportation of the engine swap, then get it e-tested, then get it insured.. so what do u think the insurance company is gonna see when they contact the ministry or whoever holds information relative to the vin numbers on the car. ENGINE SWAP.. thus, making ur insurance go sky high, and all the normal crap that u'd think they'd do.

fuck, why doesnt the whole of north america get off their lazy asses and just boycott all these insurance companies.. this is getting ridiculous..
i hate seeing some fucker with a ford with a stroker in there or a chevy with a 502 race spec engine. Im tired of this, and im gonna take action soon, im gonna start an online petition or something.

lemme know if there is one yet, im gonna see if someone wants to take it to supreme court.

and as for the japanese engines coming here.

ive been told by someone from japan that after their car reaches 50,000 km, they have to start paying an emissions tax or something like that, or they have to install a new engine, not quite sure. this information was given to me 2 years ago so im not exactly sure on everything.

so usually a s13 will come with 50 - 65000 Km. thats what i was told just days ago from a engine seller here in toronto. as for the newer engines. usually the cars get into accidents and such, so the engines that are new that we recieve cost more because it is hard to find those types of engines in crashes every day. ofcourse there are other factors into the price that are pretty much obvious, but that is one of the main factors from what ive been told by the same guy who told me about the emissions tax. ofcourse, he could have been lying about him being in japan. but i didnt know any better.

perhaps i should rephrase...in what way is it possible so that your car ENDS UP being legal...although it had to go through illegal steps?
