advance timing

prolly my last mod... unless i get a deal on some nice large injectors

anyone know how to do this? i went to advance auto for a timing light and they had two different ones. some black one for like $30 and the other one said it was an advance timing light, but it was $69. anyone know of anything cheaper?

also what is the process for advancing timing? i read it somewhere in the fsm but i can't seem to find it again.

You need an adjustable Cam sprocket to advance or retard the timing

RalphCare

yeah ive done this mod to a volkswagen once or twice while working at my former shop. adjustable cam sprockets are the gears that have 3 bolts on them. just loosen the 3 bolts and turn it so the teeth are upto 4 degrees ahead or behind. 4 is usually max. then retighten the bolts to spec and ur flyin..

well thats what i did, my boss probably did a lil more before he started the beast up.

*this is not a KA24E sprocket but this is to give you an idea*
see how it is bolted on to the camshaft?

Take off your valve cover you'll see it with your timing chain on it(I hope)

thank you for the pic ghost, thats all i f'in needed. here's a ka sprocket

all these freakin names... I LIKE PICS!! lol

and dorokin, I AM WAITING FOR MY TRANNY TO BLOW. I SERIOUSLY WANT IT TO F'IN BLOW. when it does i'm running 14's. but i might as well save some money and wait for it to die as opposed to just doing it for the heck of it. that way i can at least convince myself that i am doing it just for having a manual. i can make up an excuse to list it under "car maintenance" instead of "car upgrades". hehe

how long does it usually take a tranny to DIE?? i am brake accelerating it, shifting to 1st when im going 65mph and just beating the hell out of it.
hmm.

guys, hes talkin about ignition timing. not cam timing. lolz i've spoken to mynismo on aim, and i told him about it. its easy my nismo. you just gotta losen the distributer bracket, (not the cap itself) and then turn it until you read however many degrees you want advanced. the base timing is 20 degree before top dead center for a twin cam. i'm not sure about single cams though. now if you want to advance the thing you have to make the number go up. so to be on the safe you side, you raise it by 4 degrees. so you should have 24 degrees before top dead center on the twin cam. once again, i don't know waht the base timing is on the single cam. you can look it up on the FAQ on www.240sx.org. however there is one tricky part. the way the timing marks are set up is that they are unmarked. they are nothing more then a few lines on the pulley and you gotta line it up with a pin thats stickin out of the block. i forgot what each mark means, it either means it goes up in 5's or 10's. but i forget which way is 0 and which way is 30 etc. sorry hahah can't help you with that one. i have to look it up on alldata at work tomorrow. if your still interested let me know

anyways thanks, i knew i talked to someone but i forgot who. i knew it wasnt the cam sprocket, thats why i was confused

Good luck. Unless your making serious hp/torque the tranny aint goin nowhere

how hard is it, or how much is labor to install a torque convertor for an automatic. i heard that really gives autos some free hp.

You should do a bunch of neutral drops, or drain most of the fluid and drive hard :D

mynismo
07-13-2003, 09:56 PM
damn.... just got the fluid replaced.

some guy is interested in purchasing the rb25det dotcom i have, if that falls through i might think about it.

but i do neutral drops... hmmm maybe not enough

i will start doing it at every red light :-) too bad my tires squeal like all hell

Suislide
07-13-2003, 10:43 PM
neutral drops = 100% perfect way to eventually completely ruin your automatic transmission.

mynismo
07-13-2003, 11:14 PM
ike, since im probably going to try to sell my rims/tires in a couple months, i'll try to absolutely kill my transmission once i get my 195's back on.

i can't wait to get the 195's back on! these aa tires suck. they are sweetass in the rain and have awesome grip.... but i can't have any fun!!! arg. i want to be able to drift again.

Dorikin
07-14-2003, 05:41 PM
Wanna drift? Get a manual :D

i've already had girls do that to me at the drive-thru before... MENISMO DOESN'T NEED A MANUAL TO PICK UP CHIX

put it in neutral, rev past red line, then drop into gear never letting off the gas

when you drive in town shift it manually start in first then when it passes redline shift to second, wait passed red line again then shift to drive, this isn't the best way but it will help in time

something you could try would be go on the highway get up to speed then put it in neutral and rev to redline then drop into gear with your foot still on the pedal, that has to jack up something

I would be killing my auto too if I had full coverage insurance then I could just buy a 240 with the money I got from insurance, but since the insurance company still thinks I'm 15 and its my moms car I only pay $29 a month, so I'll keep that till they figure it out

i thought of putting it in reverse on the hiway doing about 80 :icon16:

im gonna keep the auto FOR NOW.... i really dont have that kinda money to throw around, maybe in a few mo or next yr. my auto is fairly fast right now so i'm ok with it

yes legend, its an auto. a fast auto :bigthumb:

I think you are a bit mixed up. The timing light is not for Cam timing (that will require an adjustable cam gear and some patient dyno time). The timing light is used for ignition timing. If the light has an inductive clamp, you simply clip it around the #1 cylinder plug wire and aim it at the timing belt. (usually at a certain location). Whenever the plug fires, the voltage in the wire induces voltage in the timing light essentially creating a strobe light. This "freeze frames" whree the belt is when the cylinder is firing. The marks on the belt (or a gauge cast into the block) tell you how advanced or retarded your ignition timing is.

Don't listen to Soyo. YOu're trying to blow the tranny, not your engine. And I wouldn't recommend the reverse thing (if you were serious). It would prolly be a really good way to take out the tranny, but I don't think it would be good for the engine. And I know for a fact that it wouldnt be good for the rest of the drive train. GO with nuetral drops and low fluid. :bigthumb: :chair: KILL IT!

this post is almost a month old dude! we've had numerous discussions about auto/manual since this one...

im sticking with the auto, i like it a lot better. i would only get a stick on a really fast (<13sec) car.

I doubt your insurance would cover your tranny if you blow it.

echeck? I guess that's emissions inspection? I don't have those down here in FL. I could gut the cats and put straight pipes in if I wanted hehe.
