replace engine

I saw an rx-7 up for 500 dollars but the caption under it said there was a small engine fire. So how much wouldit cost to get a new one plus whateve else was damaged plus nstallation? Just looking for a rough estimate cause i cant be very specific about it.

It depends where you go. If you go to mazda they will probably but rape you for the engine and then you'll have a nice $60 an hour labor fee. There are some really good companies that will give you rebuilds for less I would put a j-spec in if I could do it all over again. Oh, by the way what year rex is it? I'm assumeing it's a second gen cause a 3gen with a blown engine is still hella expensive.

i wuz lookin at a 89 rx7 non turbo. how much would it cost to and where could i get a j-spec engine? do 3rd gen. rx7 have a different engine than the 2nd? i want to get the 2nd gen. but i want to get a turbo kit and i dont know if they make them for that year. what are the fds3? or the 13bREW? can anyone explain that to me?

I would avoid that RX-7 at all costs, a new engine will only probably further your problems, plus RX-7's are VERY expensive to run

i'd buy that thing in a second for $500! it would take a hell of a lotta work to get it running again but i think that would kick ass...anyways you can buy a j spec engine @ http://www.corksport.com/rx7/3rxindex.html for pretty cheap. i will have sex with you if you drop a 20b engine into your car, no questions asked.
by the way the 3g's do have different engines but you can make pretty much any engine work if you know your poop

The actual 13b block is basically the same in the 3rd gen as it is in the 2nd gen although some earlier Turbo II's had lower compression rotors. J-spec engines aren't much different either to my knowledge. Honestly, $500 sounds WAY cheap and unless you can see the car in person and inspect it...better yet have someone that knows about the cars look at it as well...I'd avoid it like the plague. If it had an engine fire likely the car is toast. The chasis might be okay, but it's hard to say what else might need replacing (unibody, body panels, glass). It can get very expensive very fast...as with any car. FWIW...a 20b conversion is killer, but be prepared to shell out about $35k for the conversion alone...plus the cost of the donor car. :D There's a guy on the RX7 Forum...might still be on the Big RX7 list too...who's dropping a worked LT1 and T56 in his '95 RX7. Gonna put out over 600hp most likely...and be totally reliable and streetable. Totally NUTS :D

I'm actually a bit west of Frederick...almost to Hagerstown so I"m about an hour and a half from ya. I actually just sold the car to a guy in Chicago so I no longer have it (shipped it out last Thursday). I couldn't afford to keep making the $470 payments, $360 every three months for insurance, and go to school full time so I had to sacrifice the car. I'll likely get another one once I graduate though...probably drop a built LT1 in it with a T56 :devil: Here's a pic of it in my driveway from about 2 weeks ago.

Talking about steals, I was looking in a junk yard for spare parts when a guy told me his buddy had one. I went up to look at it and it had leather interior, power windows, power locks and the interior was perfect. When we started it up, it sputtered and died. He said it needed new "Flippers" aka apex seals. I traded him my N64 with two games for it straight. If i would have pond it, it would have be like 70 dollars maybe. :) Hey I have a question for ya all too. The car i bought it a auto. I want a manual. Can i swap a tranny from a 1st gen to a 2nd gen ya think?:rolleyes:

no clue, kinda doubt it since the sa's and fc's had different engines. why don't you find an fc transmission...but he gave you his car for an n64 and 2 games? thats kwazy

ya, its crazy. The guy had no idea what it was. This guy was a hick. He had a mullet and his exact words were "If its not a firebird or camaro, i dont want it. I've gots 9-12 camaros in my yard ranging from 69-83. This booger cant beat any of them." hehe Anyhow, I have another question. My friend has a 95 mustang gt with a 302. he has new flywheels, cold air, 9mm wires and some other minor mods. He plans on putting on a supercharger this summer. Im not sure if i would have a shot to beat him after his supercharger. Is there anyway i could beat him now? I was thinking of doing a port and polish on my motor? is it worth doing?

heh! what a queer. i'm sure the RX-7 had to be faster than the 83. yea well i think you have a shot at the mustang with some porting and basic stuff. after he gets that supercharger it'll be pretty tricky
