Hello,
i try to build the Kremer K3 Porsche 935 in 1/12 scale
That famous cars was the winner of the 1979 LeMans race.
It was the first, and only as far i know, sportscar who could reach the first place overall against the prototype.
Try to create an good enough model out of the Tamiya Porsche 935 kit.

Major changes have to made to the body work.Mainly the whole body is different. The engine and interior needs not so much attention.
But here a pic to show which car i mean.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0001nyptp.jpg
source: Bruce Canepa Autokollektion USA http://canepa.com/1979-porsche-935-k3/
Got an old build Tamiya Porsche 935 and lots of new sprues at home.Should be possible to build something K3 like out of it.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0002njq1v.jpg

First step will be some templates for the wheel arches and the fenders.

https://abload.de/img/k3_00039bquk.jpg

I was sure my next build would be an oob build after the Zakspeed car.
And i put my new Tamiya Porsche 935 onto the bench.
But when i searched the web for reference pics,i stumbled over that beautiful Kremer Porsche.
And thats it. I have to build my own one.
The very successful "Numero Reserve" car is a must. But i also like the "Apple" livery car a lot. Will try to create a mold for these.
And the 1980 "Jägermeister" car is also possible. But the 1980 cars needs even more changes to the body.

Regards Christian

Hello,
i want to show some progress on the Porsche.Even when its not the Kremer K3. :? :?
It takes a lot of time to create the 3d parts and so i decided to start with the standard Tamiya 935 Porsche.
Dont want to start a third wip thread beside this K3 and the MFH Gulf 917.So i will put the pics in this thread.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0075p4qb5.jpg

Chassis was painted matt black.

https://abload.de/img/k3_00762boqj.jpg

small parts strictly after the manual done for primer.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0077u1rdc.jpg

Decals are enough for at least two Porsche. On the left you can see the Decals printed by Wim.
He got the right fluo red colors like the real car was showing in LeMans.
Nice job Wim!

Will you be building the same car and event as what you plan for the 1/12 scale version?

Capri-Schorsch

Sorry,I didn't understand what you mean?
Both versions are in 1/12 scale.
Do you mean that?

Sorry Christian, I mean the exact same car, i.e. scheme, event, drivers. So other than the scale, the model is identical. Or are you going to build the Tamiya kit out of the box?

Capri-Schorsch
07-08-2018, 01:07 PM
The works 935 will be the LeMans 76 version who ended 4th overall
The Kremer K3 will be the one who won at LeMans 79.
The factory car will be most out of the box. No extra parts, only cables and wires will be added.

So we can move on the the next parts.

2.project of 3D-Design works with sketchup - making quadfaces for subd...
(i hate overloaded 3d programes with unuasable GUI and need to read and view tons of boring video tutorials...)
The other 3D-Design project is the AMG W08...

Nose:
green = Quadface, blue = triangle

Quadfaces and Subd (Catmull–Clark Subdivision Surface) make a perfect smooth surface.
BTW: one of the vents is not smoothed :D

it´s a super model also this one Chris.

I think there is however a mistake in the upper part of front windshiled ( upper frame edges and upper line) as well as the upper edges on the rear windshield frame.
The entire roof should be more round, as from the original 911 .

https://www.ultimatecarpage.com/images/car/834/Porsche-935-K3-7184.jpg

In tamiya 1/12 model of 935 this specific part is taken real well. Take a look on it cause is a too important part for the overall look of the finished model (I have my own deadly passion for those 911s, u know :))

great model and amazing job from Torsten

Christian, this looks even more wonderful than your previous Models.:):):)

One question, for either you or Torsten. Having got the 3d model created for printing, could this then be scaled down to print a 1/24 version. I realise that some after printing work would have to be done to fit it to any of the available 1/24 chassis. but that would be only a minor problem.

Congratulations on a wonderful looking job.

Ian:)

It already exist in 1/24 from original little garage then copied by scale coachworks and already announced as full plastic kit in 2019 by beemax. So dunno if worth the effort

Thanks Paolo, I took a look last evening and found the same flaws what you found.
And some tiny more.
Will try to use the Tamiya front window as a template to reshape the window.
Will sent some pics tonight.

Capri-Schorsch

After the first coat of filler i checked the shape of the K3 a bit more.
There are some flaws i have to convert before casting the body.

https://abload.de/img/k3_01037zdku.jpg

https://abload.de/img/k3_0104q6ddq.jpg

The front window needs some smoother shape around the edges. Will try to use the frame from the Tamiya 935 for it.
The naca ducts are too tiny and the intakes behind the door as well.
The rear engine hood is too big and need also an other shape.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0105hbejf.jpg

Naca ducts are done.Need the Tamiya ones and glue it under the body.Should work fine i think.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0106ihcmx.jpg

The rear hood needs some more attention. I drilled holes into the printed body and cut it along the fins. The height of the hood is now a bit lower.I also re-bend the shape of the surface between the fins a bit.
Now i have to glue it in place and use 2k putty to get the right shape.

Than i try to find a solution for the front window.

exactly what I mean.
Beware just where exactly the upper "turn " of the main front frame starts compared to side door windows, think that line is really important and here still in common with ordinary 911 serie. Any tamiya recent model as turbo or 934 can guide you precisely.
U get exactly what I mean grande Chris !

Maybe take also a look at the big windshield transparent part now...think is worth a measure.

this car is amazing and so unique....keep on my friend.

Now i found a solution for the roof which makes me to 95% happy.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0115p1iuf.jpg

I also used the Tamiya front hood and only have to sand a tiny bit on both sides.

https://abload.de/img/k3_01160peel.jpg

Next step will be the air intakes at both sides before i cant start with 2k putty when i am back at work in January.

Today i finished all the bodywork changes.Hope so?
Some shots of primer and tomorrow the rest. Will show some pics when its done.

In the meantime i started with the tires.
The tamiya 935 used the same tire size like the Kremer K3.So i started with them but they are very thin and wobbly.
I made an inner spacer to get more strength in it.

https://abload.de/img/comp_img_20190115_1926ukkw.jpg

Thats how it looked mounted.

https://abload.de/img/comp_img_20190115_1929akw9.jpg

Should be hard enough for casting.

https://abload.de/img/comp_img_20190115_194hmkpf.jpg

The mold is half filled with the tires. The rest will be cast.

Next step was the master model preparation.
I used some nitro putty for the fine details and started with the plate for casting.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0131p6k8y.jpg

https://abload.de/img/k3_0132b0jph.jpg

https://abload.de/img/k3_0133zvkl5.jpg

https://abload.de/img/k3_01341ekcu.jpg

On the inside i used some way sheets to get an thicker wall for casting and more stability. Its always hard to find the best solution for a light body and a good flow for the resin.
Will see how this works at the end.

I got some massive edges at the rear wheel arches.I need them for the casting. But at the end they have to be removed from the resin model.Donk know how i could make it better.Cant find a better solution.
Anybody got a idea to avoid this?
Otherwise i want to cast it this weekend.Silicon and Vaseline is here.Only need to find some hours time for it.

for an identical issue I am haveing big problems casting my nsx bodies.
They come ...but you must study very carefully the catalyzing time of your resin.

Mine, finally, becomes ok for extraction after nearly one day (10 hours) in the mould. This means, ...one day..one body. Takes patience.

one of the many reasons those toys are pricey.

Capri-Schorsch
02-02-2019, 08:29 AM
Now comes all together.
The body is ready for the silicone. The silicone needs some temperature before casting and the body needs some time to drying because of the Vaseline.
Patience is not my strongest thing.

Think about a curb side model Chris. 1/12 tamiya Porsche becomes more and more pricey. Something easy as the little garage original kit was. Can give u pics if u need.

Capri-Schorsch
02-03-2019, 12:49 PM
@Paolo: yes i thinking about a curbside kit.But first i will do a transkit.Need some fresh money right now. :sarcasmsign:

starting with the mold now.....

https://abload.de/img/k3_01423djdi.jpg

All parts are ready now.The silicone got the right temperature and all other stuff is in reach.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0143cmj0s.jpg

First layer silicone was done with a pencil to avoid air bubbles and to secure i got all details right.

https://abload.de/img/k3_01448yks2.jpg

Than i filled the deeper holes with silicone so there should no bubbles under the body parts.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0145h6j3u.jpg

Now all is ready for filling it from above.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0146hakkz.jpg

https://abload.de/img/k3_01474kkpr.jpg

Nearly 4kg silicone later its done.Next step will be the inside of the body.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0148gikj1.jpg

The bottom was removed:You can see that the silicone looks good.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0149w8kw2.jpg
The white plastic sheet was removed from the windows. That was something i feared a bit.But it was easy and with some fine work it will be ok.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0150hijkr.jpg

The grey ureol piece will be placed into the mold to save some resin.
Will use two wooden bridges and hang them into the mold from above.

Looks good so far.The windows are open now and i moved a bit step forward.

Amazing work! Looks easy, but all of us who made any cloning work know what difficult is to create a good mold and over all, good copies. Very good example of how to make it in a good way!

Pictures tell more than my basic english.
Last part of making the mold.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0151r4kcm.jpg

Inner core was cast with resin.

https://abload.de/img/k3_015269kw5.jpg

Thats how it looks when its pulled out of the mold.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0153ahjqn.jpg

Take a closer look into the silicone mold.

https://abload.de/img/k3_015428jxu.jpg

https://abload.de/img/k3_01554ykrq.jpg

Think its looking really good.I am happy with it.

https://abload.de/img/k3_01567tkke.jpg

Thats how the inner core look like.Ugly and rough. But at the end i will invest some time for smoothing it.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0157sbj3d.jpg

Cut the rear end of and sanding the cut.

https://abload.de/img/k3_015869jfw.jpg

Here is my guidance( dont know how to say "schwalbenschwanz-führung" in english) for both parts.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0159sqjr6.jpg

https://abload.de/img/k3_01600tjvh.jpg

Ready for casting now.

https://abload.de/img/k3_016190jwh.jpg

Thats it.Have to wait until its hard and than i start with smoothing the inner core.

Impressive tutorial! I'm eager to see the cast parts coming out of this!

Btw, according to LEO it's called a dovetail guide.

First body was cast today.

https://abload.de/img/k3_01624jjrk.jpg

The inner core was sanded a bit.Not too much, just right for casting.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0163kakzh.jpg

First step is to lay the smaller part into to mold and than the bigger one.I secured it with the screws.

https://abload.de/img/k3_0164mqkuf.jpg

Just made the first body.I needed 600g Resin for it and hope all smaller parts are filled with resin without big air bubble.
Need to cure until tomorrow now.Its saver when its getting hard overnight to avoid bending.

worked very well and i am happy with the result. No big air bubbles.Looking very good.
Only i have to be careful when i remove the inner core. The part from the roof to the rear wing is broken. But i will use a different way the next time.Should work better with more care.
