Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow

I am looking for the part number or a way to order the rear diverter valve. I can find the front but no luck on the rear. This part seems to go by many names such as "diverter valves", "Secondary exhaust air supply valve", By-pass valve.

It seems that since this is a California car, the emissions parts are different than what I am use to. Any help, much appreciated...

What year is your Taurus and which engine does it have?

Sorry Rod... It's a 3.0L overhead valve engine in a 1997 basic model. Has around 280K and I just redid a head gasket replacement. That's where I broke the ERG tube and diverter valve..

Does this help, or is the valve you're after not shown here?

The one shown in the diagram is the front unit. I am looking for the rear unit.

Thanks for helping!

Are you sure it's a "diverter valve" and not the "EGR valve?" There's only one diverter valve mentioned in the factory service manual, and the only part of the emission control system shown on the back of the engine is the EGR valve.

I just spent some more time this morning going through this, just to be sure.. There are 2 ERG valves. Front one is on the drivers side in the front. Secondary or rear ERG is in the center rear connected to the intake manifold. The diverter valve I am looking for is below the intake manifold, drivers side, directly below the Throttle Position Sensor. I hope I have attached two images so you can see the unit. (I never upload an image before). It appears my images are attached...

Do you happen to have an emissions diagram sticker under the hood on your car? I have not heard of a car with 2 EGR valves, and I find nothing in the factory service manual to suggest your car has two Secondary diverter valves or two EGR valves. Of course I also don't find anything in the emissions control section that clearly identifies what you've shown in the photos. Are there any electrical connectors to the device, or only tubes/hoses? Can you trace any of the tubes/hoses and list here where they go?

Are you sure you have a 1997 base model with the overhead valve? I decided to check the manual for neighboring years and other engines. When I pulled up the Secondary Air Injection system for the 1996 4 valve overhead cam engine I found the following image which seems to better align with the photos you shared.

Rod,

I finally found it. The Motorcraft part number is CX-1628.

Motorcraft CX1628 CX 1628

So now my challenge is finding one. I'm seeing that they are discontinued and don't know what my options are.

I greatly appreciate you staying with me on this! As part of the secondary air injection system, a tube leaves the air pump and takes two paths. One to the front unit and one to the rear unit. These units are vacuum operated.

Any suggestions in sourcing something like this will help!

Thanks..... John

Looks like the CX1628 and it's replacement are both no longer available. You may need to explore other possible options, such as the CX1905 found here at Rock Auto. (http://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/motorcraft,CX1905,air+bypass+valve,4908) It is quite a bit more pricey than the non-available CX1628 was selling for. And I cannot guarantee it will fit, but it sure looks similar. I found this part number after doing a search for "Motorcraft 9F491".

Rod, I have solved my problem. I was able to find a part in the local wreck yard. There were just no options. I called California yards but they just did not know what I was asking for. I consider myself very lucky top have found the part. Thank you for your help!
