ok, despite all my other work in progress, I decided to start also this one. :screwy: one more..one less...u know..

The rally purist probably already got the car, however a little explanation is due to the little monster that me (and some guys, friends of friends..) are going to make in our preferred scale.

The ECV (means experimental composite vehicle) was the never born final, deadly, evolution of the mighty Lancia delta s4. As everybody know the B groups were cancelled, but lancia already develope this car with terrific numbers: some overall... 1800cc , turbo, 930 kilos and...600 hp. Group S

the story of this incredible car here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancia_ECV

even if wikipedia only shows the ecv1 (that I am currently also building in the conventional - read old school- way), still similar to the original s4 car , the ecv2 was much smaller, with all the chassis done completely in carbon fiber monocoque. Like in formula 1 cars.yes.

the car is this little ugly italian fellow:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-d7EeoaSbPmk/VgcmpQaSOcI/AAAAAAABGFE/MePkZAlCz40/s349-Ic42/Ecv2%2525281%252529.jpg

My idea is to build this car, curbside, starting from a 3d printed body in 1/24 scale, and probably cast it in resin.

and here is what I got.
it is 3d printed, but dont ask me where and how cause I am not the technician moulding it.
Checking my documentation it looks also pretty accurate , but there are all the curved parts to smooth cause they still look like very very small lines typical of this kind of mouldings..think you understand what I mean.

from my previous buildings of my tk for the delta s4 (done in 2007 and now gone since long time..) I saved wheels and part of the decals, printed on my a4 sheet for s4 liveries

Paolino: this sis the stuff as like out the 3D machine or was sanded/finished? May you gimme more details also by PM?

the picture gives the illusion to be already completely clean.
However it needs a fine sanding all over the body to keep it to our modelling standard cause too many little lines are visible looking the body for real.
It is anyway absolutely welldone and also size and dimensions look really accurate.

after the main sanding (done right now) the body looks this way..

thansk to all guys. Is not my usual cup of tea, but is a little monster too many love and dream about down here. Is quite tricky find datas and precise measures, but think we can do it anyway.

I am having some issues trying to define the size of those specific rims (were done in carbon fiber too... O_o )

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-h7IxN8WTXik/Vgcm7P-RXlI/AAAAAAABGFE/85QqRA3c190/s640-Ic42/lancia_ecv_06_carbon_wheel.jpg
cause I dunno if they were 16 or 17s.

they will be useful also for ECV1

Incredible cars, I hope you will manage to do a kit.
I don't know if informations of this link are reliable or not -> ECV1 (http://homepage.virgin.net/shalco.com/lancia_gp_s.htm)
But they said 16' for ECV1 Carbon rims.

Same informations on this link (16' for rims) -> ECV2 (http://www.ecv1.com/e-ecv2.htm)

here again with this little ugly monster.
Made some fitting test with ken rally s4 original wheels. the size should be the same as for ecv1 and 2, so I made some test fitting.
Despite is a 3d printed body surely some adjustment may occurr, I use to study careful the pics, but in this specific car is all a little bit foggy, probably cause never become a real racer.
being my target a curbside model (and still thinking some subjects as this one are wonderful in the pure curbside version, to appreciate lines and to allow skilled modellers to make a full open-whatever model) I focused the setup as one of the most important part.

Ken made an excellent work on his wheels , as typical from this incredibly great skilled japanese modeller

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9lREmk-4ooI/VhOceJbRGiI/AAAAAAABGjQ/j5YDjmhU2oo/s512-Ic42/IMG_2446.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uv0JeuT34J0/VhOceLqZ1rI/AAAAAAABGjQ/cJ2FCkfmdzM/s512-Ic42/IMG_2447.JPG

He provided me also a full set of the air vents on the rims, cause the ecv2 mostly featured those wheels in the "real" pictures...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AhIx56OVWw8/VgcmqoHvQ2I/AAAAAAABGFE/-J73d2Pc2O4/s460-Ic42/Lancia-ECV2.jpg

despite in promo pics of course they used the ECV1 full carbon wheels..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KiIW4tXShVQ/Vgcm2zAypFI/AAAAAAABGFE/H3EQ6q-SpZQ/s783-Ic42/ecv_2.jpg

btw my mate in this project plan to make also those wheels in 3d printing. This for me is a great news cause I plan to make also my ecv1 car, and on her wheels were really a problem, cause they showed ONLY full carbon ones...

from 3d some adjustment to the wheel was necessary

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ljt8Uu9DGJ4/VolAEwNnqOI/AAAAAAABLSQ/FV1-09ijTdA/s512-Ic42/IMG_3590.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k4nXDBMum9U/VhOceCoV8jI/AAAAAAABGjQ/8ZxHnkSYNWs/s512-Ic42/IMG_2449.JPG

then I start to prepare the dime for the real windows. Not so easy to deduct the shape of a missing part. This will surely be mould in vacuform

I must confess (and apologize to those feeling hurt ) but I am nearly happy group B was banned and group S cancelled as I find this car really ugly :icon16: (I quite like the ECV1 though).

Btw, I will follow this one with great attention, as anything in martini colors attracts me ;)

Oh yes, she was absolutely ugly,I agree :)
It is anyway a fascinating car that ended the line of the mighty group B and open the doors to amazing cars like 959 and F40.
A sort of "what if" on 4 wheels, and amazing Italian technology of the late 80s.

I definitely like her then :)

thanks all guys, glad also you are interested in this misteryious car of the past.

George, I work with plasticard. Dime is 3mm thick.
Idea is to make a resin copy of it and then vacuform all the part, exactly as I did for the windshield of the Dino 206s u have there.
I just hope we can have a similar quality also here, cause that Dino part was friendly made by an ultra skilled bike modeller (grazie sempre Roby !), and was critical to have it moulded in the best way ever, being a front windshield.
This one is otherwise a rear one, and should be painted in black, or as in the real car, in a very dark smoke grey, if someone wants to add a triflux biturbo engine.

Ps. as some friends advised me, seems there could be some problems in big parts 3d printed by shapeways. Both in ultra hi res seems big parts suffer of a sort of "oil leaking" as if the part is not completely dry or catalized, and is usually not noticeable over smaller parts as rims or wheels.
It also happened to me back in time but was thinking just at an unlucky part. This could be a majior issue if somebody plans simply to finish a model using such body and paint over it, cause primers are not working at all.

This body is NOT produced by shapeways and is indeed hard and dry like a ceramic piece. From the few I know about its origin is also way too expensive (I have been told in the area of 1000 euro, without the 3d design work to do it...)

Grazie Luca.

going on with inside paert of this car. Spent some days in testfitting for the setup. Being a curbside is a critical point, cause I would like the car to sit on her wheels properly. I cant stand high setups, as well as the original delta from hasegawa 4example. so made many test and now I think I got it..
I like a lot rally cars in the asphalt configuration, very low and with large slick tyres, like those ones, corrisponding to the few pics around of the actual moke up car.

Sparco seat in white metal done, as well as the main parts for the cockpit.
The steering wheel will be the the leftover one from my Alfa 155 in Nannini version (2 brackets st wh). I made a final moke up for the overall look of this car,of course the setup should be decided during the real final assembly of the model. This one I show here is just to have an idea.

Hope you like it. Now she will be back to 3d designer to define PE parts and a nice complete decal sheet.I hope it will take few more wheeks of work, cause this final part is no longer under my responsability. :grinno:
Really hope soon I can show it in "for sale" section as a complete full kit..... and maybe in the future make an extra kit for the complete Triflux engine, that for matter of costs now we dont think to proceed with (final price can be too high for those kinda unique model..)

Those rear mirrors looks really symmetric... Impressive if you realize that they are handmade!!

One question. Maybe you explained it before, but I don't watch it... Why have you decided to "close" the front area where the headlamps are located? Thinking from a modelling view, although in the real car the headlamp was an adhesive, would be easier to put a piece of plastic painted in black that make a mask and paint in black directly over the body... at least in my opinion.

Ciao my friend,
I wanted to close it cause the 3d part there was messy cutted, and the cut was not clean as it should be in a plastic model (think at tamiya lights in all our kits). So maybe make it perfectly closed and simply place over a nicely done decal , maybe with printed on the micro screws in the edges, could be nicer for the final result, and less problematic to paint over a curved area with so sharp colors (black glossy lights over gloss white, can be easy to make a mess with masks..)
The same for the lower arrow in that area, cause surely in the moke up they were fake ones too. ALso here a 3d looking decal could be perfect for the pourpose

Ciao Paolo, It is really really an awesome build! I am really happy that you are building this particular car. I am a big fan of them and if you decide to sell some, I am up for one! Last September I visited Italtecnica and met Mr Mario Cavagnero who was responsible for the Peugeot 206 T16 engine back in the Gr. B times. I saw the ECV1 in his workshop. If you plan to build the ECV1, and need some info on it, it is only 10 minutes from my place.

thanks corrado.
I think ecv1 can be very easy to convert after beemax will produce and sell their plastic s4 kit.
I started ECV1 conversion from a resin s4 body but lost motivation during the trip.
Of the models I show here there is also a quite long list of cadavers never born, u know...

btw if you like my ecv2 write me at info@alsoldatino.com to book one. The numbers of this model are very limited and in fb many are already booked and half paid.
Sad to say, but 99% will go outside italy...

Well, I'll go for it, so that 2 percent will stay in Italy! :)

time to proceed finally with this car.
I really would like to complete and finish at least the first car to see how it comes.
Production, as you seen has been a little messy, and not because of me, but I am really satisfied with result.

I made a first fitment test for the decals. In the final sheet there will be both this black ecv2 and the red one, as from presentation pictures.

then I wanted to fit properly the rear windshield. In the models this is made in grey resin. My meaning was to make this part suitable for a vacuforming copies (reson why I kept it a little bit smaller than actuial size). It is to allow the possibility to modellers to add a full mechanichal /engine bay.

Note I am currently building the master but not using the original body . My resin copy is much better to work with cause is like a plastic model, while that 3d printed material was very easy to break and too hard to sand without damage near areas

and a first fitting for the front grille. This is divided in 3 parts in the PE set, and I think It can be easy to paint and finish it completely apart to avoid messy maskings over the white painted body. Just minor test fitting is required before place and paint body, bus as you can see the result is pretty good

the nicest part of forums compared to fb or any social network is that it is still possible recive great appreciation by ultra skilled modellers like you all are.
For me those comments are infinitely more appreciated than any hundreds of anonym likes on my fb pages and posts. Thank you all guys for your great support.

time to fix the side mirros to A pillar. some little filler is required to fit 3d body. overall look is ok I think.
I rebuild the roof little spoiler/air vent with evergreen strips. It is still not possible to have a sharp and thin detail with printer, so this parts must be always done by hand. pretty better than prototype mould.
base of white coat applied as well as a test fitting of the main lancia PE grill on the top end.

I am just sad I dont have the time to make this ecv as I really would.
Target now is just finish the model to show the overall look of the resin parts. Many are meant to experienced modellers, and I am really short in time to present it asap to complete its instruction sheet.

Best would be to open engine bay, being this a curbside shape, as well as mould in trasparent vacuform the rear windshield. I just hope so see others do it better than me, with all references available online.
Lets say is something in the way of st27/mfh curbside kits, and for me is already great to see this little taking life. Thats why I am so concentrated on its finishing and setup.

This model is a basic kit to fill a hole in rally racers collection, and for me its production has been really complicated.

I will anyway save another kit for me :)
I Love historical lancias...

my little ugly is finally looking the finish line.:icon16::icon16:

Decal went on with no problems. just a final glossy coat and checkup for overall setup, plus the final positioning of the nice PE parts.

Think very soon in completed section, also this odissey 3d project.

Just some considerations about this so discussed 3d printing of car bodes in our scale (1/24):
For sure this is the future of scale modelling, even more for subjects like this one (curbside model).
I just think the level of surface detail is still very far away from something a modeller can enjoy; One of my biggest problem here was to keep the carrosserie plain and looking like ordinary plastic. The filler and sanding hours are countless. I just remember when I had it in my hands I was terrified from the amount of micro lines made by the printing machine (the best around in 2013)

No idea really how to make such work decent on parts as rims or complex/curved parts. Not so easy and the many 3d printed stuff around, that surely many of you also collect are still a long way from ordinary plastic moulding.

It was a really cool adventure....anyway :):)

thansk a lot my Friend.

Sad day today cause it just happened yesterday that Giuseppe "Beppe" Volta, the father and saver of those experimental Lancia ECV´s (as well as delts s4 and 037s) sadly passed away in a real tragic car accident outside Turin city. This is really a big loss for all rally fan, he was a very very kindly man, always smiling and enjoing to show his masterpieces all over the world..
