i was charging the battery in my car and the charger gave me a
Shorted cell/excessive load while charging fault code. My dad said excessive resistance from corrosion on the inside of the terminals could cause this code, so i cleaned the terminals and posts and drove it for a while and when i got home the battery was smoking heavily what does this mean

The battery is toast, most likely has a bad cell or two in it.

A bad battery is also hard on the alternator.
