Simply....Torque is the ability of a force to produce rotary motion.

When riding a bike...you pushing the pedals, you are applying torque. Same thing of how and engine spins a crank.

Tightning a bolt...same thing...the harder you turn it...the more torque your applying.

When using English units...

- HP = torque * RPM / 5252
- torque = HP * 5252 / RPM
- torque = HP at 5252 RPM

Hope this helps....I think it's what your asking

How this applys to the car is;

HP determines how fast you can go in a gear.
Torque determines how fast you can get to that speed in that gear.

That is as simple as I can say it.

Another way to say it is Horsepower will determine how fast you hit the wall. Torque determines how far you move that wall.

That is as simple as I can say it. This is why my husband can't catch up to me in his 2.5L Skyline even though he's got more HP than me. I've got much more torque than he does!! :D :hehehe:

Well you have weight difference and one thing that people forget alot of times is that peak horsepower isn't worth a hoot.

You really need to look at a cars whole powerband and not just "how much power it makes".
