Effective immediately, ALL Grand Am's from '99 and up have a recall on the ignition or modification to the key.

If you experience no starts/turnover. "security" shutdowns, stalling on highway/town you are entitled to the above.

I own a '01 and have been accepted as of Friday for the key mod.Winter is coming and you don't want a 10 minute security shutdown in -30C

This recall has nothing to do with SECURITY problems, like a no start....

In fact, I think all they are going to do, on this campaign, is put a smaller ring on the key, and install inserts in the key head to restrict movement.....

GMTech1 can probably verify this......

The typical SECURITY problems, I guess, are not considered a safety issue, because they don't happen while the vehicle is started.....for example, if the problem is there before starting the car, the car won't start.....no safety problem there.....if it happens AFTER THE CAR HAS STARTED AND IS RUNNING, the SECURITY light will then come on and stay on, but the car will not have any problem running.....it will also restart, but the light will be on constantly.......thus, not a safety problem.....

What happens is, sometimes the problem clears itself, and then the light goes out.....now you go to start the car, and the problem happens again BEFORE restarting....now the car won't start.....

Recalls are basically for safety reasons......since the PassLock sensor will not shut the car down, once it is started and running, it is not considered a safety problem......it is considered a breakdown of a part, like a spark plug, coil, crank sensor, etc.

All this campaign does is try to restrict movement of the key ring......so that it's "momentum" is not enough(while swinging as you drive), to prevent that key from accidentally moving from the "run" position to the "off" position....

Once the campaign is done, you will still be instructed not to have a plethora of accessories attached to your key ring....the only thing that should be on that key ring, is your RKE fob, not the key to your house, you mother's house, your mini flashlight, your good luck charms, etc......Some of the stuff you see on a customer's key ring is unreal....

ya i got several letters from GM about their 'fix'. lmfao

and most problems with the ignition switch and engine dying at random, is weight, not the position of the keys rings.

i called them and told them what i thought about their problems that have killed more than the 12-13 acknowledged on the news. they didnt want to hear anything about it but i made them listen anyways. its happened to all the N body people i know personally, but no accidents thankfully. usually if the weight isnt the issue a new ignition switch fixes it. but theirs a few other things that'll cause the same symptoms.

All this campaign is designed to do, is prevent the lock cylinder from rotating from the on, to the off position while driving.......GM has either replaced the ignition switch with a larger detent pin in it, or has reduced the key ring size and installed inserts into the hole of the ignition key to inhibit movement....problems with the PassLock system, which cause no starts, have nothing to do with this recall....
